Contribute to cutting-edge medical research

The Research Unit of Molecular Neurobiology at the Department of Medical Biochemistry and Biophysics is seeking a dedicated individual to engage in pioneering research. Our group, under the guidance of Professor Goncalo Castelo-Branco, focuses on the intricate molecular mechanisms that govern the transcriptomic and epigenomic characteristics of oligodendrocyte lineage cells. The ultimate goal is to develop epigenetic therapies aimed at preventing and treating neuroinflammation associated with demyelinating conditions.

Your Role

As a key contributor to a five-year full-time research initiative funded by the European Research Council Advanced Grant, you will investigate the functional implications of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) within the oligodendroglia lineage and their relevance to multiple sclerosis. This multidisciplinary project encompasses in-vivo studies, advanced molecular biology techniques, cell culture methodologies, flow cytometry, and both single-cell and spatial omics approaches.

Candidate Profile

To qualify for this postdoctoral role, candidates must possess a doctoral degree or an equivalent foreign qualification. Preference will be given to those who have completed their PhD within the last three years, although exceptions may apply under specific circumstances.

We are in search of a highly motivated, inquisitive, and enthusiastic individual who is passionate about our research focus and eager to explore innovative scientific avenues. The ideal candidate should demonstrate a collaborative spirit, possess strong teamwork skills, and be capable of working independently while fostering a positive laboratory environment. A PhD in medical sciences, immunology, or neurosciences, or a related field is required. Previous research experience in a multidisciplinary international setting in any of the following areas is advantageous:

  • Neuroimmunology and/or immune disorders, particularly in animal models of multiple sclerosis (FELASA certification preferred)
  • Multiparametric flow cytometry and cell sorting
  • Culturing human pluripotent stem cell lines and mouse cell lines, including differentiation into neural lineages and cell transplantation
  • Molecular biology methodologies
  • Confocal microscopy and histological techniques

Experience with single-cell RNA sequencing and/or spatial transcriptomics data management and analysis will be considered a valuable asset.
