Postdoctoral Researcher in Mitochondrial Biology (Wredenberg Group)

Are you passionate about advancing human health?

The Division of Molecular Metabolism is dedicated to exploring the intricacies of mitochondrial function and its implications in various diseases and the aging process. Our mission is to gain a deeper understanding of disease mechanisms and to innovate therapeutic strategies. We are currently looking for 1-2 dedicated postdoctoral researchers to become part of Anna Wredenberg's research team.

About the Wredenberg Group

Our research encompasses both fundamental and applied aspects of mitochondrial biology, focusing on mitochondrial gene regulation and the molecular impacts of metabolic disturbances in individuals with mitochondrial disorders. We employ a range of genetic and biochemical methodologies, utilizing patient samples, genetically altered fruit flies (Drosophila melanogaster), and mouse (Mus musculus) models. Additionally, we investigate the interplay between mitochondrial function and overall metabolic health.

Division of Molecular Metabolism

Situated within the state-of-the-art Biomedicum laboratory at the Solna campus of Karolinska Institutet, the Division of Molecular Metabolism conducts comprehensive biochemical and genetic investigations of patients with inherited metabolic disorders, alongside fundamental research to elucidate mitochondrial metabolism regulation. We provide an exceptional research atmosphere, fostering collaboration between basic and clinical sciences at the Centre for Inherited Metabolic Diseases (CMMS) at Karolinska University Hospital. Our facilities offer unparalleled access to cutting-edge resources in molecular and cellular biology, as well as national core facilities at the Science for Life Laboratory.

Responsibilities

Mitochondrial dysfunction is a key factor in numerous rare and common diseases, significantly contributing to age-related conditions and the natural aging process. As a postdoctoral researcher, you will explore cellular mechanisms that counteract mitochondrial dysfunction and the buildup of mtDNA mutations. The Wredenberg group employs biochemical techniques, molecular biology, and modern omics strategies to investigate the molecular pathways underlying mitochondrial dysfunction and aging. Furthermore, in vivo modeling using fruit fly and mouse models, including conditional knockout strains, will be integral to this research.

Candidate Profile

We welcome applications from enthusiastic individuals holding a PhD in molecular biology or genetics. While prior experience in mitochondrial research is not mandatory, familiarity with biochemistry, molecular biology, mouse genetics, and various omics techniques will be advantageous. Candidates with a background in data analysis and bioinformatics are particularly encouraged to apply. Strong documentation skills and proficiency in both spoken and written English are essential. Successful candidates should demonstrate the ability to collaborate effectively within a research team. Personal attributes will be a significant factor in the evaluation process.

Entry Requirements

Postdoctoral Scholarship

Scholarships for postdoctoral research may be available for international researchers who wish to enhance their qualifications in Sweden. The aim of these scholarships is to foster international collaboration and support research qualifications following the completion of a doctorate or equivalent. A scholarship for postdoctoral research can be granted for a maximum of two years within a four-year timeframe following the attainment of a doctoral degree or its equivalent. To qualify for a postdoctoral scholarship, candidates must possess a doctorate or a foreign degree considered equivalent. Applicants who have not yet completed their doctorate by the application deadline may still apply, provided they meet all requirements for degree completion before the intended start date of the postdoctoral program.

The department head will assess whether prior training and academic qualifications align with a Swedish doctorate or higher.

Type of Scholarship

The scholarship amount is tax-exempt and is awarded for twelve-month periods, disbursed biannually. In exceptional circumstances, shorter durations may be considered.

Postdoctoral Employment

To qualify for postdoctoral employment, candidates must possess a doctoral degree or a foreign degree deemed equivalent. This requirement must be fulfilled by the time of the employment decision. It is preferable for candidates to have completed their doctoral degree within the last three years; however, earlier completion may be acceptable under special circumstances.
