Asthma represents one of the most prevalent chronic conditions globally, affecting approximately 339 million individuals and leading to over 250,000 fatalities annually. A significant hurdle in asthma management is its classification as a broad diagnosis encompassing various obstructive airway diseases, each with unique clinical manifestations (phenotypes) and distinct underlying mechanisms (endotypes). There is an urgent need to uncover the core biochemical imbalances (metabotypes) linked to the causes and progression of asthma to enhance the quality of life for those affected.
Research Division
The Unit of Integrative Metabolomics at the Institute of Environmental Medicine (IMM) is composed of a diverse group of researchers dedicated to utilizing metabolomics for molecular phenotyping in response to diseases or environmental challenges. Our efforts integrate modeling techniques to pinpoint biochemical pathways tied to specific disease sub-phenotypes, aiming to 1) elucidate the origins of disease processes and 2) identify markers for both the onset and resolution of systemic stress. The Unit operates within a state-of-the-art mass spectrometry facility at a renowned research institution, equipped with multiple mass spectrometers and comprehensive laboratory spaces.
Key Responsibilities
We are seeking a motivated individual to join our multidisciplinary team focused on deciphering the biochemical disruptions that contribute to asthma development. The successful candidate will spearhead the analysis of various projects that merge metabolomics and lipidomics data with other omics disciplines (e.g., proteomics, transcriptomics) alongside clinical phenotyping data. A primary objective will be to identify the crucial molecular factors influencing different asthma subtypes. Much of the research will leverage data from significant projects aimed at understanding severe asthma, as well as metabolomics information from various intervention studies exploring biologics for asthma treatment. The ultimate goal is to translate these findings into diagnostic tools for recognizing molecular sub-phenotypes of asthma.
Candidate Profile
We are looking for highly driven candidates holding a Ph.D. in epidemiology, data science, or statistics, or those who can demonstrate relevant experience through their publications. Applicants with the following qualifications are encouraged to apply: exceptional quantitative and applied research skills in data analysis, proficiency in statistical programming languages (e.g., R, Matlab), solid bioinformatics knowledge in metabolomics, and strong communication abilities, both oral and written. The candidate's time will be dedicated to data analysis, manuscript writing, and professional development. Prior experience with biological datasets or high-dimensional data, along with knowledge in biology and respiratory diseases, is a significant advantage. Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with laboratory members and international partners are essential.
Eligibility Criteria
Postdoctoral scholarships are available for international researchers who wish to further their qualifications in Sweden. These scholarships aim to foster international collaboration and enhance research qualifications following the completion of a doctoral degree or its equivalent. A scholarship for postdoctoral research may be awarded for a maximum of two years within a four-year timeframe following the attainment of a doctoral degree or its equivalent. To qualify for a postdoctoral scholarship, applicants must possess a doctorate or a foreign degree considered equivalent. Candidates who have not yet completed their doctorate by the application deadline may also apply, provided that all requirements for degree completion are met before the intended start date of the postdoctoral education.

Scholarship Details
The scholarship amount is tax-exempt and is awarded for twelve-month periods, disbursed biannually. In exceptional circumstances, shorter durations may be considered.
