Recent research indicates that eicosanoids and related lipid mediators play a crucial role in the development of severe airway diseases. Furthermore, emerging evidence suggests that the early gut microbiome produces lipid mediators linked to the onset of pediatric allergies and asthma. Therefore, identifying novel lipid mediators involved in the gut-lung connection could provide new therapeutic avenues for pediatric lung disorders.
About the Division
The Unit of Integrative Metabolomics at the Institute of Environmental Medicine (IMM) comprises a diverse team of researchers dedicated to employing mass spectrometry for molecular profiling of individuals in response to diseases or environmental factors. Our work integrates modeling techniques to elucidate biochemical pathways related to specific disease sub-phenotypes, aiming to enhance our understanding of disease mechanisms and identify biomarkers for disease onset and resolution. The Unit is located in a state-of-the-art mass spectrometry facility within the Biomedicum building at the Karolinska Institute, equipped with advanced mass spectrometers and sample processing technologies, alongside dedicated laboratory spaces.
Your Role
We are seeking a highly skilled individual to participate in a multidisciplinary project focused on elucidating the role of lipid mediators in lung diseases. The successful candidate will be responsible for utilizing and further refining mass spectrometry techniques for the quantification of lipid mediators, including eicosanoids and novel octadecanoids. This role will involve the development of innovative chromatography methods, including chiral and UPC2 techniques, for large-scale clinical studies and experimental models to map the biochemical functions of lipid mediators in lung disease pathobiology. Functional analyses will be conducted across various cell types, ex vivo lung tissues, animal models, and microbial cultures to create a comprehensive biochemical profile of both pro-inflammatory and pro-resolving lipid mediators. This project will be executed in collaboration with esteemed researchers from prominent universities.
Your Qualifications
We are looking for candidates with a Ph.D. in quantitative mass spectrometry or bioanalytical chemistry. The ideal applicant will have a proven track record in small molecule mass spectrometry using LC-MS/MS, along with experience in quantification and method validation. Familiarity with lipid analysis, cell culture, and microbiome studies will be advantageous. Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues and international partners are essential.
Eligibility Criteria
Postdoctoral scholarships are available for international researchers who meet the qualifications required in Sweden. These scholarships aim to foster international collaboration and support research qualifications following the completion of a doctoral degree. A scholarship for postdoctoral research may be granted for a maximum of two years within a four-year period after obtaining a doctoral degree or its equivalent. To qualify for a postdoctoral scholarship, candidates must possess a doctorate or a foreign degree recognized as equivalent. Applicants who have not yet completed their doctorate may also apply, provided they fulfill all requirements before the intended start date of the postdoctoral training.
Compensation and Application Process
The scholarship amount is tax-exempt and is disbursed for twelve-month periods, with payments made biannually. In exceptional circumstances, shorter durations may be considered.
