Chronic respiratory diseases represent a significant global health challenge, leading to millions of fatalities each year. Recent research has highlighted the critical role of eicosanoids and related lipid mediators in the development of severe airway conditions. Notably, studies have indicated that the early gut microbiome is a source of lipid mediators linked to the emergence of pediatric allergies and asthma. Identifying novel lipid mediators involved in the gut-lung relationship could unveil new therapeutic avenues for treating pediatric respiratory conditions.
Research Division
The Unit of Integrative Metabolomics at the Institute of Environmental Medicine (IMM) is composed of a diverse team of researchers dedicated to employing mass spectrometry for the molecular profiling of individuals affected by diseases or environmental influences. Our research integrates modeling techniques to uncover biochemical pathways associated with specific disease subtypes, aiming to enhance our understanding of disease mechanisms and identify biomarkers for both the onset and resolution of systemic stress. The Unit operates within a state-of-the-art mass spectrometry facility located in the Biomedicum building at the Karolinska Institute, equipped with multiple mass spectrometers and comprehensive sample processing capabilities.
Your Role
We are seeking a highly skilled individual to engage in a multidisciplinary project focused on elucidating the role of lipid mediators in respiratory diseases. The selected candidate will be responsible for utilizing and advancing mass spectrometry techniques for the quantification of lipid mediators, including eicosanoids and novel octadecanoids. This role will involve developing innovative chromatography methods, such as chiral and UPC2 approaches, for application in extensive clinical studies and experimental models to delineate the biochemical functions of lipid mediators in lung pathobiology. Functional investigations will be conducted across various cell types, ex vivo lung tissues, animal models, and microbial cultures to construct a biochemical framework of both pro-inflammatory and pro-resolving lipid mediators. This research will be conducted in collaboration with esteemed researchers from prominent universities.
Candidate Profile
We are looking for highly motivated candidates holding a Ph.D. in quantitative mass spectrometry or bioanalytical chemistry. The ideal applicant will have demonstrated experience in small molecule mass spectrometry via LC-MS/MS, alongside a solid understanding of quantification and method validation. Experience with lipid analysis, cell culture, and microbiome studies will be advantageous. Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with laboratory colleagues and international partners are essential.
Eligibility Criteria
Scholarships for postdoctoral qualifications are available for international researchers who meet the necessary qualifications in Sweden. These scholarships aim to foster international collaboration and support research qualifications following the completion of a doctorate or equivalent degree. A postdoctoral research scholarship may be awarded for a maximum of two years within a four-year timeframe after obtaining a doctoral degree or its equivalent. Candidates who have not yet completed their doctorate by the application deadline may still apply, provided all requirements for degree completion are fulfilled before the intended start date of the postdoctoral program.
