Experimental Physics PhD Position

Umeå University is seeking a highly motivated PhD student to join our Optical Frequency Comb Spectroscopy Group.

About the Project:

We are looking for a talented researcher to work on high-resolution broadband spectroscopy of molecules of importance in astrophysics. The project involves developing and applying optical frequency comb spectroscopy for broadband precision measurements and sensitive detection of molecular species in gas phase. Our goal is to extract information about the composition, conditions, and photo-chemistry in exoplanetary atmospheres by verifying theoretical predictions with data obtained from high-precision laboratory measurements.

Key Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will be responsible for designing and conducting experiments, collecting and analyzing data, and developing new methods for high-temperature spectroscopy. They will also collaborate with theorists to model the signals and improve the accuracy of the modeling of high-temperature environments on exoplanets.

Requirements:

To be eligible for this position, the applicant must have completed a second-cycle level degree or equivalent education from abroad. Experience in experimental laboratory research, including optics and electronics, is necessary. The candidate must be highly motivated, able to work independently, and fluent in both oral and written English.

What We Offer:

The successful candidate will receive a competitive salary, approximately €38,000 per year, depending on qualifications and experience. The employment is expected to result in a doctoral degree, and the main assignment for the doctoral student is to be part of the research education, which includes participation in the described research project but also taking relevant courses.
