The Department of Physics at Umeå University is seeking a highly motivated PhD student to join our research group in experimental physics. The successful candidate will be part of a project focused on high-resolution optical frequency comb spectroscopy of molecules of importance in astrophysics.
Research ObjectivesThe primary objective of this project is to develop and apply optical frequency comb spectroscopy techniques for broadband precision measurements and sensitive detection of molecular species in gas phase. The project aims to measure and assign hot band transitions reaching the 9000 cm-1 energy levels in ethylene and to further develop the system to reach the 12000 cm-1 energy levels in methane.
MethodologyThe project will involve the development of a cavity-enhanced system with increased sensitivity for the comb probe, as well as data acquisition and analysis. The successful candidate will work closely with theorists to model the signals and verify theoretical predictions of high-temperature spectra.
RequirementsTo be eligible for this position, the applicant must have a strong background in experimental physics, including optics and electronics. The candidate must be highly motivated and able to work independently as well as part of a research group. Fluency in both oral and written English is required.
Terms of EmploymentThe employment is expected to result in a doctoral degree and the main assignment for the doctoral student is to be part of the research education. Teaching and other departmental work can be included up to a maximum of 20%. The employment is limited to four years at full time or up to five years if teaching and other departmental work is performed.
