Centre for Demographic and Ageing Research (CEDAR)
CEDAR is a leading centre for interdisciplinary research on demographic changes and ageing, conducting studies in both historical and contemporary contexts. Our unit focuses on understanding individual and societal changes over time, with a particular emphasis on historical and contemporary demographic processes.
We host two of the Swedish Research Council's national infrastructures, SHARE-Sweden and SwedPop, which provide access to large databases for our researchers. As a result, our centre plays an active role in various national and international networks, ensuring a high degree of internationalization in our research.
To ensure stability and growth in our research activities, we aim to establish career paths for younger researchers, particularly in historical demography. This field is central to our research at CEDAR due to our possession of one of the world's largest research databases for historical demographic research.
Eligibility
To be eligible for this postdoctoral fellow position, candidates must have completed a doctoral degree or a foreign degree deemed equivalent to a doctoral degree within history. This requirement must be fulfilled no later than at the time of employment decision.
Prioritisation will be given to candidates who completed their doctoral degree no later than three years prior. However, candidates who completed their doctoral degree prior to that may also be eligible if there are special reasons, such as absence due to illness, parental leave, or similar circumstances.
A precondition for appointment is that the applicant has not previously been employed as a postdoctoral fellow at Umeå University for more than a year within the same or equivalent discipline.
Assessment Criteria
The assessment of candidates will primarily focus on their scientific merits within historical demography and experience working with longitudinal register data. Following this, the quality and feasibility of the research plan will be assessed, considering how well it aligns with the research environment at CEDAR and the extent to which existing expertise can support the proposed research.
Experience of collaboration, publishing, and presenting within the international research community is an advantage. Good writing and oral communication skills in English, as well as the ability to work with others, are essential requirements for this position. Experience with methodological skills for analyzing both historical and modern population register data using quantitative methods is also beneficial.
Job Description
As a Postdoc, you will conduct independent research in historical demography, contributing to the research environment by actively participating in seminars and other research activities. You will have the opportunity to perform data analyses, write articles for publication in scientific journals, and engage in grant applications.
This position offers a salary of approximately SEK 350,000-400,000 per annum, commensurate with qualifications and experience.
