The Swedish National Archives is looking for a Research Engineer
4 days ago
Do you want to make it possible for researchers to join together fragments of pages to identify lost medieval books? To map where, how and with what materials books were written, copied, and distributed to and within the Nordic countries?
The purpose of the National Archives is to ensure that information remains authentic, accessible and useful today and for future generations. We therefore participate in several research projects, one of which is CODICUM.
CODICUM is an ambitious, interdisciplinary research project exploring the rich world of medieval manuscript fragments in the Nordic countries. These often overlooked pieces of parchment offer an unrivalled insight into the literary culture, craftsmanship and interconnected knowledge-networks that shaped the region and bound it to Europe. Through a combination of traditional manuscript studies, scientific analyses and digital techniques, CODICUM aims to reconstruct lost books and map the flow of ideas in medieval literary networks. Partners in CODICUM are the University of Bergen, the University of Copenhagen, the University of Helsinki, the University of Southern Denmark, and the Swedish National Archives.
What you will work with
You will be part of a small team of research engineers, in Stockholm and Bergen, working to enable data-driven analysis and visualisation of medieval fragment collections across multiple databases.
Your main task is to lay the foundation for interoperability between the several Nordic fragment databases that exist and with the datasets that result from the scientific analyses of the fragments. You will lead the work on conceptual and data modelling, the identification and evaluation of APIs, vocabularies, schemas and formats for data exchange between the different fragment databases, but also work with practical wrangling of data.
Other tasks will be to participate in the design and development of a virtual library for reconstructed manuscripts, in creating improved versions of the National Archives' own fragment database, the Medieval Nordic Literature in Latin wiki, and to publish fragment data on external platforms such as Wikidata, Wikimedia Commons, and Fragmentarium.
Organisationally, you belong to the AI-lab and Data Services unit, which is part of the Department of Research and Knowledge Development. Within the department, as well as with CODICUM's constituent partners, you will collaborate with medievalists and conservators. The position will involve some travelling, mainly within the Nordic countries.
There will be ample opportunities for you to gain insight into and perhaps also participate in other research projects in which the unit is involved. You will also be offered time for professional development, attending conferences, seminars, workshops and hack-days.
We're looking for someone who has
• a relevant university degree with specialisations such as computer science, systems science, or equivalent acquired skills
• good knowledge of conceptual and data modelling with a focus on interoperability and data exchange
• knowledge and experience of working with linked open data
• knowledge and experience in developing IIIF-based solutions
• good ability to document and communicate conceptual and data models, technical interfaces and data formats
• experience in prototyping, application- and API-development
• experience working in small cross-disciplinary and agile teams
• good spoken and written communication skills in English
• work samples showcasing your ability in the form of links to (or attached information to your application) about applications, platforms, data models or your contributions to projects that show your suitability for the position
Your application will be stronger if you also have
• a degree or completed university-level classes in the humanities
• experience working as a research engineer or equivalent in a humanities research context
• a good overview of and insight into tools, frameworks, data models and data standards used in digital humanities and the digitisation of cultural heritage
• knowledge of other programming languages, especially HTML/CSS/JavaScript or .NET C#
• the ability to conduct basic UX-research and usability testing
• practical experience working with publishing on Wikidata
• good communication skills in spoken and written Swedish or, if you do not know Swedish, a willingness to learn
As a person
• you are driven by a desire to contribute to research, open science, open data and open source
• you are curious and like to learn and test new technologies and methods
• you are happy to share your knowledge and expertise
• you enjoy working together in a team, but don't mind sometimes solving problems on your own
• you have an interest in history or cultural heritage
Citizenship, work-permit, and security checks
The position is open to EU/EEA nationals or those who already have a work permit in Sweden. You will undergo a security check prior to employment.
Working at the National Archives
