Umeå, Västerbotten, Sweden Umeå University Full time
About the PhD Position

We are seeking a highly motivated and qualified PhD candidate to join our research team at Umeå University. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work on a cutting-edge project investigating the role of muscle pressure in sensorimotor control.

Research Project

The PhD project will focus on the following research questions:

  • How does muscle pressure affect proprioception and sensorimotor control?
  • What is the role of muscle spindle organs in advanced signal-processing functions?
  • Can we develop new technologies to investigate the nature and role of spindle afferent activity?

The project will involve a combination of in vivo human microneurography, robotic technologies, and custom-designed tools. The PhD candidate will also have the opportunity to work with a mammalian (rodent) model to investigate brain mechanisms involved in fusimotor control.

Eligibility

To be eligible for this PhD position, applicants must hold a university degree equivalent to a European University Masters degree or have completed course requirements of at least 240 credit points, of which at least 60 credit points should be at second-cycle level.

Applicants must also be fluent in spoken and written English. English skills and the ability to benefit from the doctoral education will be evaluated by the departmental postgraduate studies board.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate should have a strong background in neuroscience, biostatistics, biomechanics, electrical engineering, cognitive science, biology, psychology, physiology, or equivalent. Prior research experience, particularly handling and analyses of research data as well as statistical and programming skills, will be viewed favourably.

The applicant must be able to work independently as well as collaborate with members of the research team. Excellent communication skills are essential to interact effectively with colleagues.

Basis of Assessment

Evaluation of candidate ability and the potential to perform well is based primarily on:

  • Knowledge and skills relevant to doctoral studies within the research area
  • The ability to formulate and solve scientific questions
  • Skills in written and oral communication in English
  • Other experience relevant to doctoral studies, such as relevant professional experience

Good collaborative skills, drive, and the ability to work independently are considered positive merits.

About the Employment

The employment is limited to four years full-time starting from October 1st 2024 or as agreed upon. Wage allocation will reflect the established salary scale for doctoral student employment.
