PhD Student in Computing Science with Focus on Interactive Systems
2 months ago
The project aims to design and develop interactive systems that reason spatially and are centered in the human user. This involves expanding the user's skills rather than replacing them. The project will contribute to enriching user interaction with autonomous systems in a bidirectional way, enhancing both the user's spatial skills and the autonomous system's spatial reasoning.
Research GroupThe research group is led by Associate Professor Zoe Falomir and focuses on spatial reasoning, spatial cognition, and cognitive human-computer interaction. The group collaborates with national and international research groups and uses principles and methods from Artificial Intelligence, Human-Computer Interaction, and Cognitive Science.
Admission RequirementsTo be eligible for the PhD position, applicants must have a second-cycle level degree or completed course requirements of at least 240 ECTS credits, including at least 60 ECTS credits at the second-cycle level. Applicants must also have completed at least 90 ECTS credits in Computing Science or have equivalent qualifications.
Required Skills and ExpertiseApplicants are required to have documented expertise in at least two of the following topics:
- Interactive systems (e.g., videogames, virtual reality environments, cognitive robotics, etc.) and/or interactive interfaces (e.g., EEG sensors, eye tracking, virtual reality glasses, etc.)
- Automated reasoning
- Machine learning
Candidates are expected to have good knowledge in Artificial Intelligence and programming skills in languages such as Python, PyTorch, OpenAI-Gym, Prolog, ProbLog, Answer Set programming, C++, C#, etc. Experience in platforms like Unity, Unreal, Godot, or similar for programming interactive interfaces is also desirable. Knowledge in cognitive science is considered an extra merit.
Personal QualitiesImportant personal qualities for the position include creativity, critical thinking, problem-solving skills, interest in interdisciplinary research, ability to work independently and in a group, and experience in scientific interaction with researchers from other disciplines and countries. The working language in the group is English.
About the PositionThe position provides the opportunity to pursue PhD studies in Computing Science for four years, with the goal of achieving the degree of Doctor in Computing Science. The position may include up to 20% department service, usually teaching. The total time for the position is extended accordingly, resulting in a maximum of five years.
