Background
The International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement is mobilizing its network of 191 National Societies, 165,000 local branches and 16 million volunteers to address the gravity and scale of the climate and environmental crises. The Swedish Red Cross Strategic Direction calls for reducing the humanitarian consequences of climate change, recognizing the disproportionate impact the climate crisis has on world's poorest and marginalized. In line with the principles of locally led action, the Swedish Red Cross will support National Societies, people and communities to strengthen resilience, to reduce the impacts of extreme and unpredictable weather on health and livelihoods.

The Swedish Red Cross recognizes the critical role that a robust natural environment can play in providing a first line of defense against extreme weather events and the reliance of communities upon the environment for their livelihoods and wellbeing. By protecting and working with nature, we will strengthen people's and communities' ability to withstand climate-related and other disasters, ensuring a more sustainable and secure future for all. As Thematic Advisor, Environment and Green Response, you are part of the International Department and report to the Head of Policy and Thematic Support Unit.

Your role
As Thematic Advisor for Environment and Green Response, you will support two key projects aimed at strengthening environmental considerations in early humanitarian action. Your responsibilities include providing environmental and project management expertise, financial reporting, and coordination with partners within and beyond the Red Cross Red Crescent Movement. You will also advise on environmental sustainability across Swedish Red Cross (SRC) advocacy and operations, offering ad hoc support to country offices and partner National Societies.

A core part of your role is to help partners integrate environmental quality standards, promote localized approaches, and collaborate closely with other thematic advisors and geographical teams. You will monitor developments in your field, represent SRC as a resource and spokesperson, and share best practices on environmental integration in humanitarian and development work. The role also includes conducting environmental screenings, maintaining strategic networks, shaping SRC advocacy positions, and supporting resource mobilization and proposal development.

Your profile
We are seeking a highly self-motivated individual who possesses the initiative and confidence to take responsibility and thrives in an advisory capacity, offering expert guidance. As a committed team player, you will be comfortable constructively coordinating with peers to achieve shared goals. The ideal candidate will also demonstrate strong analytical abilities, be adept at capacity strengthening of low-resource organizations, and have both the capacity and willingness to promote innovative approaches in all areas of work.

Required Qualifications

  • Relevant academic degree within environmental science, environmental engineering, disaster risk management, or equivalent professional experience of at least 5 years
  • Professional experience of 3+ years of integrating environmental considerations (including climate change), especially DRR (disaster risk reduction) and/or health programming
  • Project management experience working with projects and programs including multiple organizations, and experience in working with budgets and financial planning
  • Knowledge and experience of the international humanitarian system, preferably from RCRC Movement with a background in WASH, DRR, Health, CEA and/or PGI
  • Strong experience in capacity building and facilitation skills, excellent communication skills including in the English language

Meriting Qualifications

  • Experience in mainstreaming environmental or climate change mitigation measures in humanitarian programing
  • Experience from applied understanding and application of community resilience building approaches and working with community driven processes
  • Experience in developing capacity building frameworks
  • Expertise in development of monitoring and evaluation tools
  • Command of Swedish, Bengali or Arabic
  • A valid driving license for manual transmission vehicles and be able to drive such vehicles independently
  • Hostile Environment Awareness Training (HEAT) or equivalent

As a Swedish Red Cross employee, we expect you to share the Red Cross/Red Crescent humanitarian values. RCRC values diversity and actively works against all forms of discrimination.
