Overview

We are looking for an
Engineering Manager
to take immediate operational responsibility for one or two cross-functional development teams within a large, customer-facing digital organisation.

The organisation is in a transition phase, establishing modern product- and development-oriented ways of working. As part of this journey, the Engineering Manager role is being introduced to strengthen technical quality, leadership capability, and delivery stability.

This assignment suits a hands-on, pragmatic Engineering Manager who can step into an existing setup, stabilise delivery, and simultaneously help shape long-term ways of working.

Purpose of the Assignment

The Engineering Manager will:

• Take full operational responsibility for 1–2 development teams during a transition period
• Ensure high-quality, predictable delivery
• Contribute to the establishment of structure, processes, and culture aligned with the long-term Engineering Manager role

Responsibilities

Team Leadership and Delivery

• Lead the day-to-day work of 1–2 cross-functional development teams
• Ensure progress against prioritised deliveries and commitments
• Establish clear structure for planning, prioritisation, and follow-up
• Collaborate closely with product management, design, and operations to maximise customer value
• Manage incidents, risks, dependencies, and delivery blockers together with the teams

Technical Quality and Technical Health

• Support teams in technical decision-making, design, and architecture in collaboration with architects
• Create conditions for high technical quality, including code standards, testing practices, security, and technical debt management
• Contribute to long-term technical direction aligned with organisational architecture and strategy
• Drive continuous improvement related to quality, stability, and engineering practices

Leadership, Culture, and Collaboration

• Act as a present, coaching, and supportive leader in day-to-day work
• Conduct 1:1 conversations and support individual development during the assignment
• Strengthen an engineering culture characterised by transparency, learning, ownership, and technical pride
• Actively contribute to the development of processes, structure, and working methods linked to the Engineering Manager role

Requirements

The consultant must meet
one of the following qualification tracks
.

Language: Swedish Speaking

A) Engineering Manager Track (Primary)

• Proven experience as an Engineering Manager or similar leadership role in a modern tech or product organisation
• Personnel responsibility for technical roles such as developers, QA, or architects
• Strong technical understanding with the ability to drive technical quality and long-term system health
• Experience leading teams in complex environments with multiple stakeholders (product, design, business, other teams)

B) Domain Track (Alternative)

Candidates with very strong domain knowledge of the organisation's digital customer platforms and ways of working may also be considered if they can:

• Quickly take operational leadership of development teams
• Drive delivery and manage complex dependencies
• Confidently handle prioritisation and value-based decision-making
• Create structure and momentum in a technically complex environment

Candidates in this track must have documented experience working closely with development teams and demonstrated leadership capability, even if they have not formally held an Engineering Manager title.

Must-Have Requirements (Both Tracks)

• Proven experience driving delivery in agile development teams
• Very strong communication skills in Swedish
• Ability to rapidly understand a new context and take leadership immediately
• Confidence in technical reasoning without needing to be hands-on
• Strong collaboration skills and experience working across multiple stakeholder groups

Meritorious Experience

• Java-based systems
• Azure environments
• Organisational or delivery transformations (for example from project or SAFe to product teams)
• Budget or cost follow-up responsibility in technical teams
• Consumer-facing digital services with high availability requirements
