Your work assignments
As a PhD student, you devote most of your time to doctoral studies and the research projects of which you are part. Your work may also include teaching or other departmental duties, up to a maximum of 20% of full-time.

Your research focus will be on theoretical models and simulations of thin film depositions, with a special focus on models for chemical reactions in combination with fluid dynamics.

Thin layers, or films, of various materials are of high technological importance in many aspects of our everyday lives. Thin films prevent food from spoiling, make cutting tools last longer, and form the basis for all electronic devices. One of the major technologies for making thin films is chemical vapor deposition (CVD), which relies on a flow of reactive gases containing the atoms needed for the film material. These gases undergo chemical reactions, producing products that react with the surface and deposit the atoms that build the material.

Despite the enormous technological importance of CVD, developing new CVD processes is mainly done by trial and error. Models and computational simulations can be powerful complements to experimental research, enhancing our understanding of the complex CVD process. However, modeling and simulating the CVD process is challenging due to the large span in both time and length scales, from atomic dimensions and nanosecond-fast chemical reaction rates to meter-sized reactors and relatively slow gas flow velocities.

Different modeling methods are necessary to cover all aspects of the CVD process. For instance, a combination of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and density functional theory (DFT) forms a powerful in silico approach to understanding CVD at the atomic level, while kinetic Monte Carlo methods can be used to study the development of different surface features. Still, a systematic, robust, and efficient approach to CVD modeling has not yet been established.

Your research project aims to improve existing methods and explore new ways to efficiently and systematically model and simulate all aspects of CVD processes. You will work in a team with both experimentalists and theoreticians, with access to several deposition systems, instruments for material analysis, and high-performance computing resources at the Swedish National Supercomputer Centre (NSC).

You will be part of the graduate school Agora Materiae, which brings together around 50 doctoral students in materials research at LiU. In Agora Materiae, you will have the opportunity to meet other research students, exchange experiences, and create new contacts. You will participate in study visits both in Sweden and abroad, summer conferences, monthly seminars, and courses offered by the graduate school.

Your qualifications
You have graduated at Master’s level in physical chemistry, materials chemistry, applied physics, engineering or similar subject areas, or completed courses with a minimum of 240 credits, at least 60 of which must be in advanced courses. Alternatively, you have gained essentially corresponding knowledge in another way.

Experience with Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is advantageous, as is knowledge of quantum chemical calculations (DFT). An interest in machine learning and AI-based methods, as well as programming skills in languages such as Python or MATLAB/Simulink, is beneficial.

Research at IFM is primarily conducted in English in an international environment, so a good ability to express yourself in spoken and written English is required. Equivalent knowledge in Swedish is advantageous.

Good collaboration skills, initiative, and a structured working approach are important for the role. Great emphasis will be placed on personal qualities and suitability.

The Division of Chemistry at the Department of Physics, Chemistry and Biology (IFM) carries out research, undergraduate education, and postgraduate education within biochemistry, molecular biotechnology, organic chemistry, analytical chemistry, chemical engineering, inorganic chemistry, and physical chemistry, particularly computational chemistry.

The employment

When taking up the post, you will be admitted to the program for doctoral studies. More information about the doctoral studies at each faculty is available at Doctoral studies at Linköping University

The employment has a duration of four years’ full-time equivalent. You will initially be employed for a period of one year. The employment will subsequently be renewed for periods of maximum duration two years, depending on your progress through the study plan. The employment may be extended up to a maximum of five years, based on the amount of teaching and departmental duties you have carried out. Further extensions can be granted in special circumstances.
