At the School of Innovation, Design and Engineering our students are studying to be for example innovators, entrepreneurs, illustrators, information designers, network technicians and engineers. We have five research specializations with different research profiles and research schools. Our work takes place in cooperation with and in strategic agreements with companies, organisations and public authorities in the region.

A full-time employment as a doctoral student is attached to this third-cycle studies which corresponds to four years.

Position description
The position mainly involves doctoral studies where the candidate, independently but with support from supervisors, will plan and conduct scientific studies in the area of circular factory concepts. New factories must be able to meet future climate goals and high demands for circularity. The doctoral project focuses on developing methodologies for production design that support both new establishments and a green transition, with the goal of creating insight into, and knowledge about how factories need to change to become more circular.

The doctoral education includes both literature studies and empirical studies, scientific writing of articles and dissertations, dissemination and oral presentation of research results, as well as attending doctoral courses. An important part of the dissemination will be to contribute to the development of demonstrators as well as working actively with industrial applications in close collaboration with industrial partners. As a doctoral student, you are expected to take responsibility for planning and conducting your studies, take initiatives to develop your ideas and knowledge, and be able to collaborate with others both within and outside academia. Teaching or other assignments may be included in the position up to a maximum of 20%.

The position is funded by the KK Foundation and the program “Jubilee doctoral students”, where you will be expected to participate in activities organized by the KK Foundation. As a doctoral student, you will also be part of the Production Development research group, where you are expected to contribute to the development of the group.

Qualifications

For basic eligibility, the following is required:

- A degree at an advanced level.
- At least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 are at an advanced level.
- Equivalent knowledge acquired in Sweden or abroad through other means.

specific entry requirements to be admitted to Industrial Systems are those
who have the above general entry requirements with a technical specialisation
and with a relevant main subject or equivalent.

In addition to these entry requirements, you must also have:

A degree in production engineering, mechanical engineering, industrial economics, computer science, or equivalent.

Very good oral and written communication skills in English at the level required to perform research and teaching duties.

Assessment criteria

Prior to employment, consideration must be given to the ability to assimilate third-cycle courses and study programmes at a higher education. In addition to this capability, particular attention will be paid to:

- Knowledge of or experience in industrial production is highly meritorious.

- Experience in working with industrial applications.

- Swedish language skills are highly meritorious.

- Proven experience of collaboration with individuals in various roles and environments, particularly with industry partners in industrial settings.

In an overall assessment of suitability, emphasis is also placed on personal abilities. All employees at MDU are expected to cooperate and treat colleagues and students with respect, take responsibility for the organisation and their own work duties and contribute to a positive work environment.

Great emphasis will be placed on the assessment of the following personal qualities and abilities:

- Ability to independently drive, plan, and conduct doctoral studies both individually and in collaboration with others, both within and outside academia.

- Ability to communicate and collaborate with others both within academia and industry.

- Ability to identify industrial needs and transfer research results to demonstrators, industrial applications, and for use in undergraduate education.
