Position: Professor in Bioinformatics

Department: The Department of Animal Biosciences

The Department of Animal Biosciences is part of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science and is responsible for education and research in several basic and applied areas including anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, pathology, pharmacology, toxicology, genetics, breeding, immunology, bacteriology, virology, parasitology, epizootology, comparative medicine, food safety, bioinformatics, and One Health. Our research covers production animals, sport and companion animals, laboratory animals, and wild animals.

Subject Description: The subject of employment is bioinformatics, focusing on developing methods for analyzing biological data such as DNA, RNA, proteins, and metabolites, particularly in farmed animals, sport and companion animals, and microorganisms.

Duties

The applicant will be expected to:

  1. Develop and lead internationally successful research.
  2. Develop, lead, and participate in teaching at first, second, and third cycle levels.
  3. Primarily teach bioinformatics, along with other components at all educational levels.
  4. Develop and maintain national and international networks with academia, public authorities, industry, organizations, and society.
  5. Collaborate with other SLU research teams to strengthen interdisciplinary activities.
  6. Apply for external research funding from national and international sources.
  7. Supervise doctoral students.
  8. Contribute to the strategic development of the department, faculty, and SLU.
  9. Communicate research findings and relevant information to society.
  10. Perform administrative duties within the department, faculty, and university.
  11. Possibly hold a managerial role.
  12. Be able to use Swedish as the working language within four years.

The department uses Swedish and English in parallel. The professor should be able to perform the majority of their tasks in English, but must also use Swedish as their working language within four years, with support provided for language learning.

Eligibility

The applicant must:

  1. Have successfully completed a doctoral degree with a focus on bioinformatics and hold qualifications for appointment as an associate professor (docent) in a relevant subject.
  2. Demonstrate research expertise in the subject.
  3. Demonstrate teaching expertise and integrate research into teaching.
  4. Have demonstrated the ability to lead and develop a successful, internationally recognized research team.
  5. Have demonstrated the ability to compete for substantial external research funding.
  6. Have good knowledge of English.
