Research Assistant Position

Do you want to be part of cutting-edge medical research? Join the Research Unit of Molecular Neurobiology at the Department of Medical Biochemistry and Biophysics, Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm. In Professor Goncalo Castelo-Branco's research group, we focus on understanding the molecular mechanisms that shape the transcriptomic and epigenomic profiles of oligodendrocyte lineage cells. Our goal is to develop epigenetic-based therapies for neuroinflammatory conditions in demyelinating diseases.

Your Mission

We have conducted significant single-cell/spatial omics studies, uncovering various cell states within the oligodendrocyte lineage during development and disease. Our work hints at the possibility of previously unknown functional properties of these cells, including transitions to disease-related states. Additionally, our findings suggest that certain single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) linked to multiple sclerosis susceptibility may impact oligodendrocyte lineage cells.

The ideal candidate will support a team of PhD students and postdoctoral fellows in a full-time project supported by the European Research Council Advanced Grant. The project, spanning five years, aims to explore the functional roles of SNPs in the oligodendroglia lineage and their implications in multiple sclerosis. The project involves a multidisciplinary approach, encompassing in-vivo research, advanced molecular biology techniques, cell culture, flow cytometry, single-cell & spatial omics, among others.

Your Profile

We seek a highly motivated, curious individual with a strong interest in our research domain and a willingness to venture into uncharted scientific territories. The ideal candidate should excel in collaborative research, be both a team player and independent worker, and contribute to a positive lab atmosphere. Applicant's profile:

  • Bachelor's or master's degree in biomedical sciences, molecular biology, neurosciences, or biotechnology.
  • Proven experience with animal models, especially neurodegenerative disease models, and possession of a FELASA certificate.
  • Prior exposure to any of the following areas will be advantageous:o Flow cytometry/cell sorting.

Culturing human pluripotent stem cell lines and mouse cell lines, with expertise in neural lineage differentiation.

Molecular biology techniques.

Confocal microscopy and histology.

Single-cell RNA sequencing and/or spatial transcriptomics.
