System Designer – Software Update & Diagnostics

Role description
We are looking for a System Designer with a strong background in software update chains, remote update functions and diagnostic communication in embedded automotive environments. In this role, you will work with bootloaders, signing, specific file formats and network-related requirements, using established tools, standards and processes. You will support software and diagnostic activities, participate in requirement discussions and apply suitable verification methods for ECU diagnostics.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the design and refinement of software update chains and remote update functions for ECUs.

  • Work with diagnostic communication, including UDS-based diagnostic functions and related transport-layer behavior.

  • Handle bootloader concepts, digital signing, VBF files and requirements linked to CAN FD.

  • Participate in requirement discussions with stakeholders and help clarify, assess and refine requirements.

  • Support software and diagnostic teams with domain expertise in update mechanisms and diagnostic functionality.

  • Apply and improve verification methods tailored to ECU diagnostics and related communication.

  • Ensure that solutions are aligned with relevant standards (e.g. ISO 14229, UDS on CAN and LIN).

  • Use Jira for requirement handling, defect tracking and coordination of ongoing work.

  • Communicate technical solutions, constraints and trade-offs clearly within the team and to other technical stakeholders.

Requirements

  • Proven ability to perform requirement assessments and align expectations with stakeholders.

  • Practical experience with UDS-based diagnostic functions.

  • Good insight into transport-layer behavior for relevant protocols.

  • Competence in software update mechanisms, remote update processes and diagnostic functionality for ECUs.

  • Experience working with bootloader concepts, digital signing, VBF files and requirements connected to CAN FD.

  • Strong ability to discuss and explain technical matters within this specialization.

  • Working knowledge of Jira.

  • Understanding of standards such as ISO 14229, including UDS on CAN and LIN.

  • Experience using verification methods tailored to ECU diagnostics.

  • Good communication skills in English, spoken and written.

Meriting

  • Experience from automotive or other embedded domains with high reliability and safety requirements.

  • Experience from working in cross-functional teams with software, hardware and test.

  • Experience with additional automotive communication protocols or tools.

  • Experience from larger international development organisations.
