Background:
Many component specifications require a defined compound-zone (nitrided layer) thickness, which must be verified after nitriding or nitrocarburizing. Current practice involves destructive sectioning or the use of a non-destructive device, which is accurate but obsolete and no longer available.

Conventional eddy current testing and potentially other techniques such as Barkhausen or ultrasonic inspection have demonstrated good correlation between measured and actual layer thickness determined by metallography. However, still there are no available methods to be used hence a new reliable method or instrument with high reproducibility, repeatability, and long-term availability is needed to be evaluated.

Project Description
This thesis will conduct an in-depth evaluation of promising non-destructive testing (NDT) equipment for measuring nitrided layer thickness. Work will include

  • Testing a range of NDT methods and instrument settings on heat-treated test samples.
  • Comparative metallographic measurements and verification in Bodycote's production environment.
  • Collaboration with technical partners within RISE, Stress Service AB, etc, for expert support and data validation.

Potential for an optional parallel thesis in electronics or software engineering may focus on reverse-engineering or advanced software analysis of eddy current instruments to complement the main study. The project will be carried out as a master's thesis in collaboration with your university, with a planned start in the winter term of 2026.

Both an idividual person or two partners can apply for this Master thesis work.
