Project Overview
The ELaaS initiative is a newly funded endeavor supported by the European Union, the Swedish Energy Agency, and Chalmers University of Technology, focusing on the Transport Area of Advance.
This collaborative project involves two divisions at Chalmers University of Technology: the Division of Systems and Control within Electrical Engineering and the Division of Service Management and Logistics within Technology Management and Economics.
The Automatic Control Group specializes in applications pertinent to the transportation and energy sectors, boasting a rich history in robust and optimal control design methodologies.
Our research emphasizes the management, design, delivery, and enhancement of services from both organizational and broader supply chain perspectives, with a focus on various sectors including transportation, construction, healthcare, and manufacturing.
Role Description
The postdoctoral researcher will engage in a unique interdisciplinary environment, tasked with (i) developing innovative mathematical models for last-mile distribution that consider the complexities of energy supply, and (ii) applying these models to facilitate the transition to electric vehicles for freight transport operators.
Project Goals
Within the project, we propose a novel operational energy-based framework for multimodal urban logistics systems. This energy-centric quantitative approach allows us to systematically target sustainability objectives. The ELaaS project aims to minimize overall energy consumption from consolidation centers to end customers. Key goals include:
- G1) Defining logistics flows through models and scenario design methods.
- G2) Quantifying energy usage in logistics flows and devising energy-efficient delivery solutions, including dynamic scheduling of micro platforms and charging-parking allocations.
- G3) Analyzing spatio-temporal energy consumption of urban logistics systems, performing sensitivity analyses under power grid interruptions, and conducting scalability assessments of ELaaS algorithms.
- G4) Quantifying freight demand and analyzing necessary customer behavior changes to implement ELaaS.
Key Responsibilities
This position presents significant opportunities for further academic or industry research roles, supported by numerous ongoing collaborations with leading international groups. The postdoctoral researcher will receive a monthly salary and can take classes at Chalmers, where there are no tuition fees for PhD studies. Major responsibilities include:
- Developing new methods and algorithms.
- Actively participating in the EU project.
- Publishing and presenting findings in top-tier scientific journals.
- Contributing to proposal writing.
Qualifications
Applicants should possess a PhD in applied mathematics, computer science, transportation science, operations research, systems and control, or a related field. Excellent presentation skills and fluency in English are essential. Proficiency in operational research, integer optimization, and statistics is required, while experience with partial differential equations and machine learning methods is advantageous.
Contract Details
This postdoctoral position is a full-time temporary role for a duration of two years, based in the Department of Electrical Engineering.
