PhD Position in Modeling Dynamically Operated Biological Activated Carbon Filters for Water Treatment

Biological activated carbon (BAC) filters are widely used in water treatment to remove organic contaminants, making the water suitable for further use. Despite their widespread adoption, there are still many scientific questions about their operation. For instance, will aeration or oxygen dosing enhance filter performance, or is the frequent removal of the biological material (biofilm) from the carbon particles beneficial? Additionally, understanding the properties of the carbon particles is crucial. By addressing these aspects, we can optimize the technology and operate it more efficiently, resulting in cleaner water at lower costs.
Research ObjectivesTo better comprehend BAC filters, we aim to develop a detailed description of the physical-chemical transport processes and relevant biology, integrating them into a comprehensive mathematical framework. We will incorporate existing knowledge from Wetsus and Wageningen, as well as literature, into this code. In setting up this model, important decisions will be made about which phenomena are relevant and must be included, and which parts are less relevant. A key aspect is the physical description of the functioning and growth of the bacterial phase (in the form of biofilm).
The BAC column behaves like a reactor that operates dynamically, and this dynamic behavior will be studied and quantified by numerical modeling. The results of the model will be compared with existing data from literature and the Wetsus laboratory.
Your AssignmentYou will develop a comprehensive model of a BAC column filter's dynamic operation, taking into account variables such as oxygen dosing and biofilm growth. The project involves:
- Creating models for mass transport, adsorption, and reaction.
- Solving simplified models using spreadsheet software such as Microsoft Excel.
- Using Maple software for more complex numerical programs.
The ultimate goal of this project is to gain a deeper understanding of the key processes involved in the operation of BAC columns. By doing so, you can make recommendations for improving the design and use of these filters. This project offers a great opportunity to develop your modeling and problem-solving skills in the field of water treatment.
Your ProfileWe are seeking a student with an MSc degree in chemical engineering, or a related education that combines aspects of chemistry and physics. You should have a strong interest in theoretical modeling of mass transport, adsorption, and chemical reactions by methods from the field of chemical reactor design. You should be able to critically read scientific literature and think deeply about a technological process to identify the key mechanisms. You should be able to communicate your research results in personal discussions, and by writing reports and scientific papers.
