We shape the future through innovative education and ground-breaking research results, and based on the Arctic region, we create global social benefit. Our scientific and artistic research and education are conducted in close collaboration with international, national and regional companies, public actors and leading universities. Luleå University of Technology has a total turnover of SEK 2 billion per year. We currently have 1,500 employees and 17,900 students.

In the coming years, multi-billion investments will be made in large projects in Northern Sweden to create a fossil-free society both nationally and globally. Luleå University of Technology is involved in several of these cutting-edge research projects and in the societal transformation that they entail. We offer a broad range of courses and study programmes to match the skills in demand. We hope that you will help us to build the sustainable companies and societies of the future. The “Engineering Materials” research group is seeking motivated candidates for a PhD position to carry out research on a new Ni-based superalloy. As a PhD student, you will be a part of a dynamic and international research environment, closely collaborating with industry and leading universities worldwide. The research group “Engineering Materials” is engaged in extensive research programs spanning a broad range of metallic and ceramic materials. We are part of the Division of Materials Science, which operates under the Department of Engineering Sciences and Mathematics. The Department has several other research topics relevant to materials research (e.g. material mechanics, machine elements and solid mechanics).

Project description
This project aims to evaluate a new wrought Ni-based superalloy, ATI 273TM, which offers high manufacturability and exceptional properties that surpass existing superalloys. This project will systematically study the thermodynamic properties, microstructure, mechanical properties, and weldability of ATI 273TM. The goal is to ensure that this superalloy can be seamlessly integrated into aerospace component manufacturing workflows while maintaining structural integrity and performance throughout its lifecycle. Key users of the research findings will be aeronautical engineers and manufacturers, who can leverage the results to design more reliable and efficient aircraft engines, thereby reducing operating costs and environmental impact.

DUTIES
A doctoral position involves both theoretical and experimental work aimed at advancing the understanding and application of nickel-based superalloys in high-temperature aerospace materials. The research will be applied and multidisciplinary, encompassing laboratory work, modeling, and characterization. You will engage in comprehensive thermodynamical characterizations, and heat treatment optimizations. Your duties will include conducting experimental studies to optimize heat treatment processes and performing detailed microstructure analysis using advanced microscopy techniques. The project will also require you to assess the mechanical properties and weldability of the ATI 273TM alloy, ensuring its practical applicability in aerospace manufacturing. The project is carried out in collaboration with GKN Aerospace in Trollhättan, Sweden.

As a PhD student, you will be trained in scientific work through the publication of scientific articles in reputed journals and at national and international conferences. You will take both compulsory and elective courses, plan and execute your research projects independently, and have the opportunity to participate in teaching activities. This position offers a comprehensive experience in both experimental and theoretical aspects of scientific work, fostering your development as a researcher.

Qualifications
We are looking for an exceptional candidate who combines deep theoretical knowledge with a keen interest in experimental research. This PhD position is focused on materials characterizations and thermodynamical calculations, essential elements in our cutting-edge
research project. The ideal applicant will hold a Master’s degree with a focus on Materials
Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, or an equivalent field, demonstrating a strong foundation in the principles of materials science.
We value candidates who are not only motivated and enthusiastic but also capable of pioneering research, working autonomously, and contributing effectively as part of a dynamic team. Excellent communication skills and fluency in both spoken and written English are essential.

During evaluation, special emphasis will be placed on:

• Knowledge and experience directly relevant to the current research project.
• Quality of degree project or other relevant scientific publications.
• Communication and collaboration skills.
• Personal characteristics that are conducive to research productivity.

This PhD position offers the opportunity to engage in groundbreaking research on aerospace materials at the forefront of the field, within a collaborative and supportive environment.
