The department includes about 115 people of which 9 are professors. Our mission is to advance the understanding of forest ecosystems and how these should be managed today and in the future.

Subject Area
The subject area for the position is silviculture with focus on silvicultural systems, mainly in boreal forests. A silvicultural system is a planned program of treatments throughout the entire life of a forest stand, designed for influencing the growth of trees and their spatial and temporal distribution to achieve predictable characteristics that align with stand specific economic, ecological and social objectives.

Duties

The employee shall within the subject area for the position:

1. act in accordance with the vision, goals and core values of SLU
2. contribute to the strategic development of department, the faculty and SLU
3. develop and lead an internationally successful environment for research
4. develop knowledge as a basis for future sustainable silvicultural systems, with a special responsibility for northern Sweden
5. develop knowledge of both even-aged and uneven-aged silvicultural systems
6. develop knowledge of silvicultural systems adapted to different priorities between economic, ecological and social objectives
7. conduct both basic and applied research
8. use and develop the faculty’s long-term silvicultural field trials, with a special responsibility for northern Sweden
9. publish scientific articles in international journals with peer-review
10. apply for external funding in competition at national and international level
11. supervise doctoral students and postdoctors
12. lead, develop and participate in teaching and supervision of students at all levels
13. collaborate with researchers within the department, the faculty, SLU’s experimental sites and other parts of SLU, as well as nationally and internationally
14. collaborate and develop regional, national and international networks with the society at large
15. disseminate research findings
16. perform administrative duties within the department, the faculty and the university

Non Swedish-speaking staff members are expected to, within four years of first being employed, have sufficient knowledge of Swedish/Scandinavian to understand information in Swedish. The department will support the holder of the position to achieve this.

Qualifications

The applicant must meet the following qualification requirements:

1. have a doctoral degree in a subject area relevant for the position
2. be scientifically skilled within the subject area for this position
3. be pedagogically skilled
4. have demonstrated leadership skills
5. have good knowledge of English

Assessment Criteria

Assessment criteria for appointment of a professor will primarily be based on the degree to which the applicant possesses the required qualifications specified for the position.

The assessment of scientific skills will consider:

1. completed research activities and ongoing research within the subject area
2. future research vision within the subject area
3. ability to independently initiate, lead and develop innovative research within the subject area
4. ability to attract external funding in competition
5. ability to supervise and examine at doctoral level and supervise Postdocs

The assessment of pedagogic skills will consider the ability to:

1. plan, conduct and evaluate their own teaching at all levels
2. supervise and examine undergraduate, master level and graduate students
3. convey and implement their pedagogical vision
4. integrate up-to-date research and scientific approaches into teaching

The assessment will also consider:

1. ability to develop and manage academic units and staff
2. personal view of leadership
3. ability to communicate and collaborate
4. ability to collaborate with external stakeholders and society at large
5. dissemination of information on research and development projects

The position will be offered to the person who, after a qualitative overall assessment, is assessed to be most suitable to carry out and develop the above-mentioned duties and to contribute to the positive development of the organization.
