Work assignments

The Department of Management and Engineering operates within the Faculty of Arts and Sciences and the Faculty of Science and Engineering, comprising 20 divisions. The Division of Economics consists of approximately 30 members and engages in education at all levels and research within the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. The division’s research is characterized by interdisciplinarity through collaboration with other research environments, a clear connection to current societal issues and engagement with the broader community, and a pronounced policy orientation. The division conducts research in areas directly linked to Agenda 2030 for sustainable development. Examples of these areas include economic analysis of discrimination and inequality, sustainable financial economics, behavioral and health economics, and transport economics.

As a Professor of Economic History, you are expected to adopt a long-term perspective on economic and social development with a strong focus on policy issues. The research should address contemporary topics such as globalization, the environment, migration, technological development, the labor market, the housing market, the financial market, and gender, all viewed from an economic history perspective. Furthermore, the research may also cover classical topics such as economic growth, distribution, entrepreneurship, enterprise, and innovation. Since economic history is housed within the Division of Economics, it is desirable that you conduct research connected to economics, preferably also linked to related disciplines within the department, such as business administration, political science, and production economics, or within the broader university context.

You are expected to conduct internationally competitive research of high quality in economic history. This includes initiating and leading research projects, collaborating with colleagues, actively seeking external research funding to strengthen the division’s external financing, and publishing research results in high-ranking scientific journals and monographs with reputable publishers. As a research leader, it is also important to foster an attractive research environment within the division through active presence and collaboration with colleagues. The primary responsibility of this position, in addition to conducting your own research, is to secure external funding for doctoral students and postdoctoral researchers and to establish, develop, and maintain a research environment linked to this professorship. Active participation in public debate is also part of the position.

The work assignments include teaching and supervision at all levels. Additionally, together with colleagues, you are expected to take responsibility for the division’s educational programs and its collaboration with other interdisciplinary programs.

In research, collaboration involves disseminating findings, making them accessible, and ensuring their practical application. In education, collaboration involves planning, organizing, and fostering meaningful engagement within educational contexts.

The position may also include administrative duties, such as board assignments. We also encourage you to take part in and show interest in leadership roles.

Your work includes staying informed about national and international developments in your field and other societal trends that are relevant to your responsibilities.

Your presence and active engagement are essential for performing your duties effectively and thriving within the workplace community.

Qualifications

We are seeking someone who has demonstrated both scientific and pedagogical excellence. For this position, primary emphasis will be placed on scientific excellence, secondary emphasis on pedagogical excellence, and tertiary emphasis on other proficiencies, which will be considered equally among themselves.

In terms of scientific excellence, the following will be assessed:

- A requirement for the position is documented scientific excellence at a high international level in economic history. Scientific excellence is demonstrated through high-quality and substantial publications in economic history and external research funding obtained in competitive processes.
- A particular merit for the position is documented scientific excellence in economics.

In terms of pedagogical excellence, the following will be assessed:

- A requirement for the position is documented pedagogical excellence in economic history. Pedagogical excellence is demonstrated through high-quality and diverse teaching activities at the undergraduate, advanced, and doctoral levels.
- A requirement for the position is having supervised doctoral students through to their dissertation defense.
- A merit for the position is documented pedagogical excellence in economics.

Other proficiencies that will be assessed for this position are:

- A merit for the position is proficiency in leading, organizing, and administrating activities within teaching or research.
- A merit for the position is documented proficiency in collaboration within research.

Since teaching and research are conducted in English and Swedish, you must demonstrate the ability to teach and conduct research in English. Additionally, it is desirable that you can teach and conduct research in Swedish within two years.

This employment is permanent, full-time. Starting date by agreement.
