Job Description:

The job is a full-time position for Doctoral Candidate (DC) in the field of tribology and material science. The candidate will be a key resource to the project 4-seasons accessibility and safety through engineered wearable and mobility devices (4SEENGRIP). The goal of this project is to increase the all year-round accessible sweet mobility of all users by developing an engineering-based labelling solution for wearable and mobility devices. This position is part of the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Doctoral Network GreeNexUS, an EU funded training program for 10 doctoral candidates.

About us: RISE is Sweden’s research institute and innovation partner. RISE is an independent, State-owned research institute, which offers unique expertise and over 100 testbeds and demonstration environments for future-proof technologies. We conduct contract work, research and education in tribology, surface characterization and surface design.

Working place: The project will take place at the RISE department of Material and Surface Design in central Stockholm, Sweden. Secondments are scheduled at the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at NTNU in Trondheim, Norway and Hultafors Group in Örebro, Sweden. These secondments provide the Doctoral Candidate a more practical and wider perspective to the challenge of sustainable accessibility to our urban spaces. Transnational mobility is an essential requirement of Marie Skłodowska-Curie Doctoral Networks. At the time of recruitment, the DC must not have resided in Sweden for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to the recruitment date and not have carried out in Sweden his/her main activity (work, studies, etc.). Applicants must be prepared for a stay of 10 months at NTNU in Trondheim, Norway. The selected candidate will be appointed under a 36-months full-time employment contract with full social security and fiscal coverage, as foreseen by Norwegian national legislation. This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon Europe research and innovation programme under the Marie Skłodowska-Curie grant agreement No 101073437. As a PhD candidate you are normally paid from gross SEK 400 000 per annum before tax, depending on qualifications and seniority.

Project focus: Healthy and zero-pollution active mobility should be made possible all year round and to all users, including the young, elderly and disabled people. Accessibility is a key topic that is usually addressed in a simple way by eliminating architectonic barriers in the urban built environment and, in particular, in vulnerable users’ infrastructures. Shoe soles, strollers, disabled walkers/rollators and wheelchairs all require sufficient grip to allow movement and stability especially in cold climate conditions (ice, snow, water, etc.). The project will look into the details of the interaction above, aiming to increase safety and accessibility of urban spaces by improving the level of grip through the development of an innovative testing and labelling system for winter shoes and wheels. 4SEENGRIP will take into account the fundamental role of friction at the interface of walking and riding devices (shoes, walkers, strollers, etc.) in all weather conditions to increase the range of safety and accessibility for all vulnerable users, main actors of the urban “sweet” mobility.

Who are you? The candidate is required to have a master’s degree in Material Science, Mechanical engineering, Chemical Engineering or Applied physics and NOT to hold any PhD degree. The candidate education must correspond to a five-year Norwegian degree program, where 120 ECST credits are obtained at master's level. Previous research experience, although appreciated, is not mandatory. Good oral communication skills in English are required. Oral and written communication skills in a Scandinavian language is an advantage. Willingness to travel internationally for the purpose of research, training and dissemination is mandatory.

At the time of recruitment, the DC must hold a Master’s degree or similar degree giving access to PhD and not more than 4 years of previous research activity. A PhD degree in any field is not compatible with this DC position.
