Machine Learning-Accelerated Virtual Testing for Automotive Head Impacts
This PhD project is part of a collaboration between Autoliv Development AB and Royal Institute of Technology - KTH.
Virtual testing based on finite element (FE) models is driving the transformation of vehicle assessment and safety research to enhance the protection of road users. However, the FE simulation is notoriously time-expensive, resource-intensive, and exclusively accessible to FE-skilled specialists, hindering the scalability and applicability of virtual testing for automotive assessment and fast-paced traffic safety research. This project will develop a data-driven, machine learning (ML) model of the human head with rapid and reliable brain strain prediction across diverse automotive impacts to accelerate the virtual testing workflows. New knowledge of brain biomechanics relevant to current and future road users will be generated.
Supervision: Svein Kleiven, Shiyang Meng, Xiaogai Li, Jawwad Ahmed and Zhou Zhou are proposed to supervise the doctoral student. Decisions are made on admission.
- A postgraduate education at an institution that is active and supportive in matters pertaining to working conditions, gender equality and diversity as well as study environment.
- Work and study in Stockholm, close to nature and the water.
- The doctoral student is offered a 4 year highly specialized doctoral training, making the candidate an expert in head impact biomechanics and helmet design technologies as well as being aware of commercializable market opportunities.
Admission requirements
To be admitted to postgraduate education (Chapter 7, 39 § Swedish Higher Education Ordinance), the applicant must have basic eligibility in accordance with either of the following:
- Passed a second cycle degree (for example a master's degree), or
- Completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 second-cycle higher education credits, or
- Acquired, in some other way within or outside the country, substantially equivalent knowledge.
KTH Royal Institute of Technology is seeking a highly motivated recently graduated Master (Of Science) in Engineering. Candidates should be willing to change the world (and to travel to research partners).
Preferably, the person should have a Master in Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Engineering Physics or equivalent, preferably with a biomechanics background. Knowledge of continuum mechanics and/or FE modeling is desirable but not required.
In order to succeed as a doctoral student at KTH, you need to be goal-oriented and persevering in your work. During the selection process, candidates will be assessed upon their ability to:
- Independently pursue their work.
- Collaborate with others.
- Have a professional approach.
- Analyse and work with complex issues.
Great importance will be placed on the applicants’ ability to work independently, communicate in English, and work in a group with other researchers.
After the qualification requirements, great emphasis will be placed on personal skills.
Information regarding admission and employment
Only those admitted to postgraduate education may be employed as a doctoral student. The total length of employment may not be longer than what corresponds to full-time doctoral education in four years' time. An employed doctoral student can, to a limited extent (maximum 20%), perform certain tasks within their role, e.g. training and administration. A new position as a doctoral student is for a maximum of one year, and then the employment may be renewed for a maximum of two years at a time. In the case of studies that are to be completed with a licentiate degree, the total period of employment may not be longer than what corresponds to full-time doctoral education for two years.
