PhD Candidate in nuclear materials science

Stockholm, Sweden KTH - Royal Institute of Technology Full time

School of Engineering Sciences at KTH Project Third-cycle subject: Physics

We are looking for a PhD candidate to work within the research platform NuMaP (Nuclear Materials Platform) ( numap.se ) with modeling and experiments of damage mechanisms in advanced structural nuclear materials. NuMaP connects KTH, Luleå University of Technology, Uppsala University, Linköping University and Chalmers with the nuclear industry in Sweden and is financed by the Swedish Energy Agency. The PhD candidate will be part of a multidisciplinary team of researchers and students.

The student will participate in several sub-projects in NuMaP but will focus on radiation damage effects in advanced structural materials, such as alumina-forming steel, and in interfaces between different advanced steels. The project contains both modeling and experiments. Multiscale modeling based on electronic structure calculations will form the basis of the theoretical part and will be compared experimentally with the help of ion irradiation and detailed materials characterisation. Some steels are developed within the platform and their future optimization may be affected by this research project.

Supervision: Professor Pär Olsson is proposed to supervise the doctoral student in collaboration with Dr Peter Szakalos. Decisions are made on admission.
