The Swedish School of Sport and Health Sciences, GIH, is Sweden's foremost knowledge centre for sports, performance development, physical activity and health. We conduct research of high quality and societal relevance within the subject of sports science with a focus on humans in motion. We train teachers in the school subject of sports and health, as well as coaches, health educators, sports managers, sports scientists and researchers. At GIH, 160 employees and 1,400 students work and study. The university is centrally located in Stockholm, close to Stockholm Stadium and a large sports and outdoor area.
Project Description
As our society experiences an accelerating demographic shift towards an older population, age-related cognitive decline and dementia pose a pressing societal challenge. Research aimed at understanding how cognitive function can be preserved and restored in old age is therefore of unprecedented importance.
In this project, we investigate the effects of repeated exposure to low oxygen levels, known as episodic hypoxia, on cognition and the brain in healthy older adults. The project is based on the discovery that the hormone erythropoietin (EPO), primarily known for its role in red blood cell production, is also produced in the brain in response to low oxygen levels, where it contributes to increased neuroplasticity and improved memory function. The project applies longitudinal structural and functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) as well as targeted cognitive assessments to test whether hypoxia training enhances cognition and brain function in a manner consistent with the theorized effects of brain-derived EPO.
We are now seeking a postdoctoral researcher in cognitive neuroscience for this research project. A postdoctoral position is intended to provide the opportunity, after obtaining a doctoral degree, to develop independence as a researcher and to create conditions for further academic qualification.
Job Duties
As a postdoctoral researcher, you will have a leading role in the neuroimaging component of the project, including optimizing protocols, data collection procedures, and analyses. You will also have an operational role in data collection, as well as in the analysis, interpretation, and preparation of results for scientific publication. You will be part of an interdisciplinary research team with expertise in psychology, neuroscience, physiology, and sports science.
80% percent of your time will be dedicated to research within the project, while the remaining 20% will be allocated to teaching and departmental duties.
Eligibility Requirements
To be eligible for employment as a postdoctoral researcher, you must have obtained a doctoral degree or an internationally recognized equivalent in psychology, neuroscience, physiology, medicine, or an equivalent field deemed relevant by the employer. This eligibility requirement must be met no later than the date the hiring decision is made. It is considered an advantage if you have obtained your doctoral degree within the past three years; if there are special circumstances, an earlier degree may also be considered.
We seek a highly motivated candidate with strong scientific mindset and solid analytical skills to contribute to our goal of understanding the effects of hypoxia training on brain and cognition. Furthermore, you have strong collaborative and organizational skills and the ability to work independently. Significant emphasis will be placed on personal qualities.
Assessment Criteria
- Significant emphasis is placed on scientific expertise in areas relevant to the project, such as psychology, neuroscience, and physiology.
- Significant emphasis is placed on strong analytical and quantitative skills.
- Considerable emphasis is placed on previous experience with structural and functional MRI and related analysis software (e.g., SPM, FSL).
- Considerable emphasis is placed on good programming skills (e.g., MATLAB, Python, R).
- Considerable emphasis is placed on strong scientific communication skills, both written and spoken, in English.
- Emphasis is placed on experience in administering and developing cognitive tests.
- Proficiency in Swedish is considered an asset but is not a requirement.
Duration/Working Hours
Fixed-term full-time position (100%) for three years. Start date: September 1, 2025, or as agreed.
