Örebro, Örebro, Sweden Karlstad University Full time

We are looking for a postdoctoral researcher in biomedicine for a fixed-term position at the School of Medical Sciences.

Subject area

The subject area for this position is Biomedicine.

Background

Responsive Nutrition (Rosetta@oru) focuses on interdisciplinary research based on an internationally leading set of validated methods and models to assess the intestinal, metabolic and mental health benefits of foods and dietary supplements, and to determine who benefits from specific dietary changes over the life course. Responsive Nutrition integrates the development and validation of this unique toolbox with applications in the areas of intestinal injury, inflammatory diseases and metabolic disorders, neurodegenerative diseases, and affective and behavioral disorders, using novel experimental and interventional study designs. Our vision is that sustainably produced foods with health benefits will become consumers' first choice.

The postdoctoral project is part of a recently granted 4-year EU project on individual interactions between dietary fiber and the intestinal ecosystem with a connection to IBS. We are looking for a postdoctoral fellow with the skills and experience to plan, conduct, analyze, and publish results related to gut microbiota, microbial metabolites, and clinical dietary intervention studies. It is an advantage having experience in the application of bioinformatic tools for the analysis of microbial data.

The postdoctoral position is located within the School of Medical Sciences (MV) at Örebro University, which is a modern, expansive university with around 1,600 employees and 17,000 students, and with an outstanding research activity. MV is also home to the university's medical education, and also contains a number of strong research activities whose main focus is inflammation, metabolism and nutrition. Responsive Nutrition also forms an important part of Örebro University's strategic knowledge profile around Food & Health.

Duties and responsibilities

The appointment as a postdoctoral researcher is intended to enable persons who have recently been awarded their doctoral degree to consolidate and develop primarily their research skills.

The postdoctoral researcher will be involved in planning, executing, analyzing, and disseminating results in studies combining laboratory experiments and human dietary interventions. The postdoctoral researcher will be responsible for conducting microbiota and microbiota metabolite analyses of samples collected among study participants.

Qualifications

Those qualified for appointment as a postdoctoral researcher are applicants who at the time of appointment hold a doctoral degree or have a degree from abroad deemed to correspond to a doctoral degree. Applicants with doctoral degrees that have been awarded no more than 3 years prior to the application deadline are to be considered first. The applicant may not previously have held a position as a postdoctoral researcher for more than one year in the same subject and at the same higher education institution. The position is for a term of at least 2 years initially but may be extended for a further 1 year. If the person during the period of employment has been on parental leave, the period of employment is to be extended by the corresponding number of days. The period of employment may also be extended in the event of absence due to illness.

Assessment criteria

A basis for the assessment is the applicant's ability to disseminate information and communicate; collaborate and engage with the wider community; and facilitate utilisation of the university's research. In addition, the applicant's suitability for the position will be assessed. Suitability refers to the applicant demonstrating the personal qualities required to successfully perform the duties and responsibilities at hand, the ability to cooperate with other members of staff, and the ability to contribute to the development of the operations.

Particular attention is to be paid to the applicant's prospects of contributing to the future development of both research and education. Importance is also attached to a demonstrated ability and ambition to embark on a career within academia.

It is particularly advantageous to have specific experience in laboratory studies with human microbiome and microbiome metabolites as well as planning and conducting studies, especially in connection with human dietary intervention studies.

The successful candidate has good communication-, organization- and interpersonal skills. He/she also has the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
