Postdoctoral position in single-cell RNA sequencing of infecting bacteria

- Single bacterial genomics and transcriptomics play a crucial role in advancing our knowledge of the microbiology realm, discovering new enzymatic activities, and identifying antibiotic resistance, among other breakthroughs.
- Bacterial populations display significant diversity, enabling different cell subgroups to thrive in various settings. This diversity prompts bacteria to react through distinct transcriptional programs, leading to substantial challenges in accurately analyzing individual cells.
- Recent progress in single-cell techniques, especially single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq), provides a valuable tool to uncover cellular diversity during infections and decipher subgroup variances influencing individual cell outcomes.
- However, current bacterial scRNA-seq methods face limitations such as sequencing a low number of cells and detecting a low number of transcripts in each cell.
- Therefore, our main goals are:
- To develop an innovative high-throughput RNA sequencing technology tailored for single bacterial cells.
- To apply this technology to a model system (Yersinia sp.) to gain deeper insights into gene expression dynamics steering cell responses, adaptations, and evolution.
- The postdoctoral fellow will be actively involved in research, contributing to experiment design, execution, and data analysis. They will lead the implementation of new methods in the lab and present/publish results to wider audiences. Additionally, they will engage in research-related activities like seminars, group meetings, and conferences.
- To qualify under the postdoctoral agreement, candidates must hold a doctoral degree or an equivalent foreign degree by the time of appointment.
- Preference will be given to candidates completing their doctoral degree within the last three years. Exceptions may apply for special cases such as illness, parental leave, or military service.
- Candidates must have a doctoral degree or an equivalent foreign degree in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, or Microbiology. Proficiency in molecular biology, biochemistry, and microbial cultures are essential. Experience in droplet microfluidics, microscopy, and flow cytometry is beneficial. Prior exposure to transcriptomic or genomic library preparation and sequencing is necessary. Bioinformatics skills and knowledge of programming languages like Python, Perl, or R are desirable.
