We are currently looking for a Senior Scientist in Biopharmaceutics to join our New Modalities and Parenteral Development team (NMPD) in Gothenburg, Sweden. The NMPD department is responsible for developing both new modality projects and traditional synthetic molecules that require parenteral delivery. It also houses specialized Biopharmaceutics and Microbiology capabilities that support the oral and parenteral late-stage synthetic portfolio.

NMPD is part of the Pharmaceutical Technology and Development (PT&D) function. PT&D acts as the bridge that transforms groundbreaking science into effective medicines that benefit millions of individuals. We cover the entire value chain, focusing on designing and providing the active ingredients, formulations, and devices needed to support new and existing medicines for wide-ranging benefits.

What you'll be doing:

As a Senior Scientist, your primary responsibility will be to develop in-depth Biopharmaceutics understanding of various drug products, including conventional dosage forms, enabling formulations, nanomedicines, and advanced drug delivery technologies for multiple delivery routes. Your expertise in Biopharmaceutics will be crucial in applying cutting-edge digital approaches to enhance mechanistic understanding of drug product performance and to develop effective bridging strategies. These insights will play a key role in supporting product design and drug projects from early clinical phases through commercial filings and beyond to marketed products.

You will collaborate extensively across different skill areas with team members from diverse backgrounds, such as analytical, material science, engineering, formulation, packaging, devices, clinical, and supply chain, among others.

Key responsibilities for the successful candidate will include:

  • Ensuring the development of robust products and manufacturing processes through support of bridging and control strategies, marketing applications, and downstream commercialization activities.
  • Independently designing and generating key data packages to required quality and timelines.
  • Building, documenting, and clearly communicating Biopharmaceutics knowledge for designated drug products.
  • Authoring regulatory documentation to aid clinical trial and marketing applications and ensure continuous and safe access to our products by patients.
  • Collaborating within the skill area to develop Biopharmaceutics technology strategies and implement capability building activities.
  • Providing technical supervision and mentorship to peers and students.
  • Driving innovation, safeguarding intellectual property, and enhancing AstraZeneca's scientific reputation by publishing high-quality research and engaging in external collaborations.

Essential requirements:

  • Degree in a relevant subject leading to industrial or academic experience of applying Biopharmaceutics knowledge to pharmaceutical problems.
  • Strong laboratory skills with a proven track record of generating impactful in-vitro data closely aligned with our predictive modeling.
  • Good understanding of the relationship between drug product properties and pharmacokinetic performance, ideally with knowledge of control strategy development.
  • Experience in utilizing Physiologically based Biopharmaceutics modeling (PBBM) and/or innovative techniques to support formulation development.
  • Strong collaborative working and communication skills, including effective collaboration with colleagues from diverse backgrounds and skill areas.
  • Excellent organizational and planning skills with a history of delivering within agreed timelines and quality standards.

Desirable requirements:

  • Knowledge of cGMP.
  • Experience in mentoring peers and students.
  • Experience in publishing high-quality research and engaging in external collaborations.
