Master's thesis: AI-supported exploration of policy pathways for sustainable wood-based electronics in Europe.

We are looking for a Master of Science student for a thesis project at the Sensor Systems unit at RISE in Göteborg. The work is carried out jointly with the Printed, Bio- & Organic electronics unit at RISE in Norrköping.

Background And Description
The transition to sustainable electronics requires anticipatory strategies to manage technological, regulatory, and market uncertainties. This master's thesis, conducted within the EU-funded HyPELignum project, applies a foresight-driven approach to explore the future of wood-based electronics and inform policy pathways for their adoption in Europe.

The methodology combines horizon scanning, scenario planning, and backcasting, supported by generative AI to enhance efficiency, coverage, and traceability while maintaining expert oversight. Horizon scanning uses AI to synthesize large-scale literature, patents, and policy sources, identifying weak signals and emerging drivers. Scenario planning builds on these insights to develop plausible futures and stress-test policy options, while backcasting translates preferred scenarios into actionable roadmaps with milestones and policy levers. Stakeholder engagement through interviews and workshops ensures robustness and legitimacy. The expected outputs will directly contribute to HyPELignum's policy recommendations for sustainable electronics. It will also demonstrate the value of combining foresight tools with generative AI for anticipatory governance in emerging technology domains.

Terms

  • The thesis project is expected to be carried out during Spring 2026. The duration of the work is about 20 weeks
  • Credits: 30 ECTS in agreement with your thesis advisor at your university.
  • Compensation: 10,000 SEK will be allocated for travel, materials, and the like after the project is completed and approved.
  • Location: RISE, Göteborg. Option to partially work remotely.

Qualifications:

  • Master's student in Sustainability and Environmental Studies, Innovation and Technology Management, Sustainable Product Development or Design Engineering, Materials Science with a sustainability focus, Environmental Policy or Sustainability Governance, Data Science or AI for Sustainability, Industrial or Systems Engineering, or related fields.
  • Familiarity with generative AI tools is essential; Familiarity with policy frameworks, circular economy principles, or sustainable electronics is an advantage.
  • Strong analytical and research skills; Ability to synthesize complex information and engage with stakeholders.
