Department of Historical Studies
At the Department of Historical Studies, which belongs to the Faculty of Humanities, education and research are conducted in the three subjects of History, Archaeology and Classical Archaeology and Ancient History. Education is offered at all levels, from the undergraduate to the PhD student level. The research takes place both within the individual subjects and in major interdisciplinary projects, where national and international collaboration is an important element. The department currently has around 100 employees in the form of researchers, lecturers, doctoral students, and administrative support staff. Read more about our Department here:
We are now looking for a researcher in marine environmental history
Duties
The research position is in the field of marine environmental history. The historian will coordinate the development of an online story-map of the pre-industrial socio-economic history of fishing in defined case study areas. The story map will visualise the diversity and abundance of local pre-modern fisheries and provide a historical baseline for ongoing considerations of the introduction or modification of marine protected areas in pre-selected areas in Spain, Iceland, Norway, France, Italy, Tunisia, Turkey, Brazil, and South Africa. The research will be conducted within the Biodiversa project Socio-ecological planning of MPA.
Qualifications
The successful applicant must have a PhD in history or economic history, or similar as well as good oral and written proficiency in English.
The applicant must
- be able to work across disciplinary boundaries, especially with experts in fisheries and marine ecology,
- be a quick learner with big data analysis, and
- help coordinate the project (good organiser, understanding personality, patient communicator).
Employment
The position is funded for research 75%. An additional 25% may be agreed between the successful candidate and the university for teaching duties in a cross-departmental collaboration with the Department of Historical Studies, the Unit of Economic History, and the Sea and Society initiative. Teaching may be at the undergraduate and post-graduate levels. The project runs from June 1, 2026, to January 31, 2029.
