About the role
As the Managing QA Lead on the Hearts of Iron team, you will play a central role in ensuring that the quality of all internally developed releases is well understood, communicated, and continuously improved. At Paradox, QA is an integrated part of the development team: we contribute to design discussions, support feature development, and help ensure that what we ship is both stable and fun for our players. In this role, you will drive the QA strategy, lead and support the QA team, coordinate testing efforts, and work closely with both internal developers and external QA partners. You will be responsible for the growth, well-being, and performance of the QA team while also engaging in hands-on QA work and improving processes across the project.

Key Responsibilities

  • Define, plan, and execute the QA and testing needs for Hearts of Iron IV.
  • Lead, support, and coach the QA team in their daily work and long-term development.
  • Track, evaluate, and communicate product quality throughout the development cycle.
  • Recruit, onboard, and mentor QA team members as the team evolves.
  • Conduct performance check-ins and support career development within the QA craft.
  • Coordinate with external QA partners, ensuring they are equipped and aligned with project needs.
  • Collaborate with designers, engineers, producers, and other disciplines to support feature development with QA insight.
  • Continuously improve workflows, testing methodologies, and QA processes across the project.
  • Provide QA expertise and leadership to other teams in the studio when needed.

Requirements
To succeed in this role, we believe you are collaborative, structured, proactive, and not afraid to dive into hands-on testing when needed. You enjoy problem-solving, communicating clearly, and helping both teams and individuals raise the overall quality bar.

We think you have:

  • Previous experience in QA for game development
  • Experience in leading QA work, coordinating others, or managing QA teams
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Hands-on experience with Jira or similar bug databases
  • A strong understanding of QA methodologies, test planning, and risk assessment

Nice to have

  • Familiarity with Paradox Development Studio titles, especially Hearts of Iron
  • Experience coordinating or managing external QA partners
  • Experience working through full development cycles (from alpha to release)
  • Strong interest in systems-heavy or grand strategy games
