Doctoral student in Quantum Electronics and Signal Processing
2 weeks ago
We are looking for a doctoral student who wants to work with the development of future superconductor-based quantum computing control. The position includes research on how multiplexing of qubit control can be carried out in both the time and frequency domain, and how this may influence qubit performance. The project spans several disciplines and involves work within both electronics and signal processing.
About usScalinq, in collaboration with WACQT and the Department of Electrical Engineering (E2) at Chalmers, is hosting an industrial PhD position in the area of qubit control. Scalinq is a supplier of packaging solutions for superconducting quantum computing. In this project, we aim to investigate how multiplexing of qubit control can be implemented in the time and frequency domain and how it affects qubits.
At the Department of Electrical Engineering, we conduct internationally renowned research in biomedical engineering, antenna systems, signal processing, image analysis, automatic control, automation, mechatronics and communication systems. The department has around 200 employees from more than 20 countries and collaborates extensively with academia, industry and society. We offer approximately 100 courses, many of which are part of the Master's programs in Biomedical Engineering, Systems Control and Mechatronics, Communication Engineering and Electrical Power Engineering. About the research projectIn this position, you will work with state of the art development of future superconductor-based (SC) quantum computing (CQ) control. We want to investigate how multiplexing of qubit control can be done in time- and frequency domain and how it affects any qubits.
The research project includes:
- Designing multiplexing solutions for qubit control
- Contributing to the fabrication of these designs together with qubits
- Measuring and evaluating different multiplexing schemes under cryogenic conditions
- Investigating signal integrity and pulse distortion under various multiplexing conditions
- Co-authoring publications, white papers and technical presentations
A successful implementation of these solutions is a step toward realizing a fully functional quantum computer. Scaling quantum computers toward thousands of qubits is currently limited by data transport. Multiplexing several data streams through the same cable may help overcome this bottleneck in an energy- and resource-efficient way.
Who we are looking forRequirements:
- Master's degree (120 credits) or a Master's degree (60 credits) in physics, electrical engineering or a closely related field
For applicants with an education from outside Sweden, a four-year Bachelor's degree is accepted - Strong presentation and communication skills
- Interest in learning about current research in quantum technologies
- Fluency in professional English, spoken and written
- Ability to travel internationally, including to the US
- Ability to relocate to Sweden
- Conduct research on multiplexing for quantum computing
- Teach, including supervising master's students and working as a teaching assistant
- Take courses at PhD level
- The Doctoral student positions are fully funded from start.
- The position is a fixed-term appointment of four years, with the possibility to teach up to 20%, which extends the position up to five years.
- A starting salary of 34,550 SEK per month (valid from May 25, 2025).
- Doctoral studies require physical presence throughout the entire study period. A valid residence permit must be presented by the study start date; otherwise the admission may be withdrawn.
- As a Doctoral student at Chalmers, you are an employee and enjoy all employee benefits. Read more about working at Chalmers and our benefits for employees.
- A dynamic and inspiring working environment in the coastal city of Gothenburg.
- Read more about Sweden's generous parental leave, subsidized day care, free schools, healthcare etc at Move To Gothenburg.
Chalmers is dedicated to improving gender balance and actively works with equality projects, such as the GENIE Initiative for gender equality and excellence.
