Your role and responsibilities
You will be working at ABB Corporate Research in Västerås, Sweden. At Corporate Research, we lead the innovation within ABB to ensure ABB's technology competitiveness now and in the future. In this project, you will be interacting and engaging with two teams: the Industrial Network & Control team and the Materials Technology & Energy Storage team.
ABB develops battery systems for marine, traction and stationary applications. Batteries need to be operated within set boundaries (V, T, I,…) to ensure safe and adequate performance. MPC of battery systems, considering physical constraints and battery health, may enable optimised battery operation and customer profit.
This project aims to build a platform where a prototype MPC framework connects with real battery cells to create a hardware-in-the-loop test demonstrator for advanced control, bridging the gap between control-system design and implementation.
With the platform, it will be possible to investigate the feasibility of an MPC set-up, e.g. in terms of cost, communication, computational demands and engineering effort.
Project goals:
- Set up a test bed for MPC-based control of battery operation (charge and discharge cycles)
- Validate and show the benefits and feasibility of a new model-based fast-charging control methodology developed in-house
Qualifications for the role
- Master's student in Computer Science, Industrial Engineering, or a related field
- Background in automatic control and model based predictive control
- Motivation to learn ABB DCS system (system 800xA)
- Motivation to set up a lab-scale PA setup integrated with the ABB system 800xA
- Motivation to implement classic and advanced control systems in an industrial platform
- Knowledge or a special interest in battery technology is a merit
