Looking for a thesis that combines cutting-edge technology, real-world impact, and sustainability?

Start: January 2026 | Duration: 30 HP | Presentation: June 2026

Location: Valmet AB, Axel Johnsons väg 6, Karlstad, Sweden.

Valmet AB Karlstad designs and manufactures machines for tissue production, serving a global market with high-quality products such as facial tissues, bath tissues, towels, napkins, and more. Sustainability is a key priority, with continuous innovation focused on reducing energy, water, and fiber consumption, while minimizing emissions.

We are offering a Master's thesis opportunity to investigate Very High Cycle Fatigue (VHCF) in 3D-printed steel materials, comparing them to conventionally manufactured materials. This research will enhance our understanding of fatigue behavior in components exposed to long-term cyclic loads—critical for the reliability of tissue machines.

Thesis Objectives

  • Conduct a literature review to define testing methods and sample size.

  • Perform fatigue tests on:

    • Reference material (conventional manufacturing)

    • 3D-printed steel material

  • Analyze the impact of different parameters on fatigue life.

  • Provide recommendations on:

    • When to use 3D-printing vs. traditional methods

    • Limitations of 3D-printing

    • Optimal parameter settings for fatigue performance

Your Profile

  • Master's student in Mechanical Engineering, Product Development, Solid Mechanics, or similar.

  • Passion for analytical and testing methods.

  • Proactive and eager to learn in a cross-functional team environment.

  • Access to an ultrasonic fatigue testing machine at your university is required.

What We Offer

  • Introduction to Valmet's products and technologies.

  • Collaboration with experts in mechanical engineering, product management, and structural analysis.

  • A meaningful project contributing to sustainable innovation in tissue production.
