Background
RISE Data center systems is a research unit within RISE focusing on the data center industry. RISE ICE Data Center is a specialized research facility used in research and innovation projects. The primary areas of research at the unit include data center technologies, energy efficiency, cooling systems, digital infrastructure, heat reuse systems and sustainable data management solutions. The organization is involved in advancing innovation in the data center sector, with a strong emphasis on sustainability and efficiency.
The organization has extensive experience in supervising thesis work at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. The unit regularly collaborate with Luleå University of Technology and other academic institutions, offering students the opportunity to work on cutting-edge research projects within the data center domain. RISE is also well-connected within the global data center community, participating in numerous international projects and events and continuously developing new partnerships. The organization plays a pivotal role in driving forward research that meets the evolving needs of the digital economy while ensuring environmental sustainability.
The RISE ICE data center facility is well-equipped with state-of-the-art technology, providing an excellent environment for research and development. The facility has test rigs for air and liquid cooling, climate chambers and wind tunnels, edge nodes, local smart grid, heat box, data center emulators and test server rooms.
The background to the project is that in the future 6G network, computing capacity will be integrated into the network in the form of so-called edge nodes that perform computations as close as possible to users and equipment. Low latency is a new opportunity with 5G and 6G. With the ever-increasing demand for computing power and the miniaturization of server components with high power demand, it is crucial to be able to distribute power efficiently to future server environments such as 6G edge nodes.
Description
The purpose of this project is to study and develop concepts for power distribution to future servers with high energy density in 6G edge nodes. A prototype node has already been developed. The project focuses on creating concepts for modular power distribution for the servers in a 6G edge node. The modular concepts can then be used to create different solutions. The use of direct current +/-400V feeds (DC), advanced super caps and as few transformers as possible are the design tracks to study. The OCP, Open Compute, rack will be considered as a starting point. The power demand for one cabinet will be up to 2 MW and a pod of a few cabinets will require 10 MW. To make the solution sustainable and energy efficient as few transformations steps as possible will be required. Liquid cooling of power components also needs to be considered.
Project Objectives:
- Development of Modular Power distribution concepts: Design and develop modular components that can be used in combinations to create different solutions.
- Integration to concept blueprints: Integrate the modular components together to create complete power distribution solutions.
- Simulation and Validation: Create models and conduct simulations to ensure that the developed components reach the performance and thermal conditions.
- Documentation and Reporting: Document all development steps and test results to enable future improvements and further development of the project.
Key Responsibilities
The project will be implemented in the following phases:
- Feasibility Study and Requirements Analysis: Identify specific requirements and goals for the modular power distribution.
- Design and Development: Design and develop concepts for the modular components based on the identified requirements.
- Evaluation and Adjustment: Evaluate the concepts with simulation models and make necessary adjustments to optimize the performance of the power distribution.
- Final Report and Documentation: Compile a final report that documents the entire project implementation and results.
Expected Results: The project is expected to result in one or more concepts for power distribution with modular components to future servers.
Qualifications
The thesis is for one person on a Master of Engineering program as the final exam thesis. The candidate should have completed all courses in the program. Programs considered are Electrical engineering, Mechanical engineering or Engineering physics or similar.
Terms
The project is for 30 HP (30 weeks) and enumerated with a scholarship of kr. The scholarship is paid out when the thesis report is reviewed and approved by RISE and the school.
