Introduction
Thesis work is an excellent way to get closer to Scania and build relationships for the future. Many of today's employees began their Scania career with their degree project.

Background
The emission norms are getting stricter with time, which demand improvements in efficiency of the internal combustion engine as well as the performance of aftertreatment system. One way of creating favourable operating conditions for the aftertreatment system is by controlling the gas-exchange process of the combustion engine. Most effective way of achieving this by modifying the valve timings. There are several techniques for achieving variation in valve timings and one of the most popular ones is using cam phaser. The cam phaser is a complex system which is attached to the camshaft and uses pressurised lubrication oil to achieve change in valve timing.

Objective
Aim of this thesis project is to prepare a detailed model for a part of the cam phaser system in GT-Suite and identify the most sensitive design parameters in the part's design that influence the performance of cam phaser system. Moreover, the model is to be calibrated and validated using measurement data from test cell.

Job Description
The project can be divided into several milestones:

  • Literature review to develop understanding of the system and its working principles.
  • Simulation with cam phaser – previous and available example models in GT-Suite.
  • Calculation or measurement of geometric parameters of components in the part of interest.
  • Integration and simulation of subcomponent models to achieve detailed cam phaser model.
  • Calibration and validation of the detailed model using measured data in test cell.
  • Identification of most sensitive design parameters which affect phaser performance.

Education/program/focus
Indicate education, program or focus: The student is pursuing a master's degree preferably in mechanical engineering, vehicle engineering, solid mechanics, fluid mechanics or any other related field. It is essential that the student has a profound understanding of concepts of internal combustion engines, fluid mechanics and theory of machines. Moreover, basic knowledge in the field of controls and mechatronics is advantageous but not mandatory.
