Background

Eneryield specializes in AI systems for analyzing time series data and predicting future faults and interruptions in electric power systems. This application has tremendous potential to enable predictive maintenance, maximize uptime, and facilitate integration of renewable energy sources in the grid. This intersection of state-­of-­the-­art AI methods applied for power systems is a relatively unexplored area of research, making it an excellent opportunity to contribute to an important challenge with high impact.

The project

Preventing power grid faults has the potential to prevent outages and deliver huge societal value. However, disturbance recordings are rich, noisy, and identifying the most informative patterns in signals is challenging. For this reason, machine learning methods offer great promise and the possibility to turn high-frequency grid data into trustworthy early warnings.

You will explore existing state-of-the-art time-series models, and adapt them to this specific domain and data. A key theme is designing problem-specific objectives and guiding models toward the most informative features, rather than hoping black-box algorithms will find them. The project will include:

  • Surveying existing methods in neuro-symbolic and self-interpretable AI
  • Training and adapting models on sequential data from industry
  • Designing custom loss functions for this under-explored problem
  • Tailoring features to optimize information density
  • Deriving deeper information from data related to root cause and location of faults

Requirements

  • Active enrollment in a Master's program in Computer Science, Engineering Physics, Electrical Engineering or similar
  • A genuine interest and proficiency in Machine Learning and AI, interest in energy and electric power systems is a merit
  • Proficiency in Python
  • Hands-­on experience with ML frameworks such as TensorFlow or PyTorch
  • Oral and written fluency in English
