Master's thesis: AI-Assisted Development of Mission-Critical Software: A Case Study on MCX over Sidelink

Background
Mission Critical Communication is vital for police, fire, and ambulance services, where reliability and real-time coordination save lives. Traditional narrowband systems like TETRA provide secure voice but limited data. The move to 5G enables richer multimedia services and is the new standardised technology for voice, video and data communication. AI can accelerate this shift by partly automating design, code generation, testing, and validation, making mission-critical software applications faster and safer to develop and deploy. In Sweden, the existing Rakel TETRA network will be replaced by the 5G based Swedish Emergency Network by 2030.

Description
This thesis investigates how AI-assisted development can support the creation of mission-critical applications using MCX over Sidelink where Sidelink is the new 5G based technology to be used for device-to-device communication. A simple Northbound Interface (NBI) will be designed for MCX login/logout and SDS (messaging) send/receive. A reliable SDS-based demonstration application will be developed to evaluate performance and robustness. AI tools will assist in design, coding, and testing, and their impact on productivity and quality will be measured. The study will also identify which AI-generated components are reusable and what human modifications are required to meet mission-critical standards. The results aim to provide practical insights for the safe and efficient use of AI in developing critical communication software.

The thesis will be performed in conjunction with an ongoing international research project involving partners from Sweden and the US. There will be excellent opportunity for interaction with technology leading companies as well as end users.

Qualifications
Good Programming skills in Python and C++

Basic knowledge of wireless/telecom networks

Ability to independently seek and analyze information and create solutions in collaboration with other stakeholders

Terms
Start time: January/February 2026

Scope: 30 hp (20 weeks)

Location: AstaZero (Göteborg). Options to partially work remotely.
