Sweden has a long and successful tradition of protecting children in car crashes. A high proportion of young children (0-4 years of age) are travelling rear-face, which has been proven to be the safest way to travel for children; forward-facing children face a fivefold higher risk of severe or fatal injury. When a rear-facing child restraint system is installed in the front passenger seat, it is crucial to turn off the airbag.

Children are the only population group known to experience an increased risk of death attributable to front-seat airbag. Various solutions exist for airbag deactivation, including physical on/off-switch and digital or software-based systems as well as removal of the airbag devices. Since 2006 (last updated in 2017), a national recommendation has been signed among the car manufacturers to promote rear-facing seating, and the importance of turning off the front-seat passenger airbag. Several new car manufacturers have emerged on the European market since then.

The aim of the thesis is to identify and map how car manufacturers fulfill 2017 Swedish recommendation. More specifically, it involves:

  • To identify not only how cars manufacturers turn off the front seat passenger airbag but also to map what kind of recommendations do they have for child safety? (manuals, interviews with car manufacturers, etc.)
  • User tests examine how to turn on-off and/or how to determine airbag status. This could either be e.g, field test (observational study on site) or a usability test contrasting different approaches how to turn off the airbags)
  • Propose new or alternative design solutions increasing the safety of children as front seat passenger.

    The work is expected to be included in the ongoing discussions at national and international levels regarding the development of new regulations for child safety in cars.

Depending on timing and results, you may also have the opportunity to write a scientific paper based on your work.

Requirements: Swedish as language would be beneficial. Knowledge of product design and evaluation including e.g., observational studies, ergonomics, interaction design, or equivalent is beneficial. Suggested educational background includes master programs such as industrial design engineering, Interaction design; Technology, Work and Health; Human computer interaction; product design, or equivalent.

The work may involve one or two students.
