Sverige, Sweden The European Spallation Source Full time

The European Spallation Source (ESS) is one of the largest science and technology infrastructure projects being built today. Our goal is to become the brightest source of neutrons for science and technology and be operational by the end of this decade. A state-of-the-art suite of neutron scattering instruments will be made available to address a wide range of scientific fields in fundamental and materials science. Powered by the world's most advanced linear proton accelerator, ESS will enable cutting-edge research in materials science, energy, health, and the environment for decades to come.

Join us in shaping the future of science - from the ground up.

About the role:

ESS is at an exciting turning point, transitioning from a construction site to an operating facility. To help us achieve our goal of becoming the world's most powerful neutron source, we are looking to add an experienced Neutron Detector Technician to our Detector Group. The Detector Group at ESS is responsible for designing, building, testing, commissioning, and installing all neutron detectors, enabling our researchers to "see" their experiments using our neutrons.

Day-to-day, you will:

  • Configure, design, procure, assemble, test, evaluate, iterate, fabricate, and deploy Detector systems.
  • Follow best practices, safety directives, and the code of professional conduct.
  • Document all efforts thoroughly.
  • Develop and nurture networks of suppliers, scientific collaborators, and in-kind partners.
  • Support the efforts of colleagues in the above.
  • Assist the detector integration works with the efforts of assembling, testing, and repairing the detectors and their sub-systems.
  • Independently carry out the assembly and installation of detector components according to the assignment.
  • Manage and deliver multiple assigned tasks in parallel and on time.

The position is a 3-year fixed-term agreement based at the ESS Campus in Lund, Sweden.

About you:

We are seeking an experienced technician with a hands-on background in detector assembly, hardware testing, and the repair of electronic boards. Ideally you have several years experience with technically supporting neutron detectors and their associated electronics and mechanics, and are familiar with the ESS Way of Working.

As a professional, your work is thorough and well documented, with a demonstrated ability to produce clear technical documentation when required. You must be comfortable operating and maintaining laboratory equipment, and you need to be familiar with rigorous testing, calibration, and troubleshooting procedures. Your practical expertise also extends to building and repairing complex electronic systems at the circuit level, and you are diligent about managing work instructions, datasheets, and process documentation whilst always adhering to best practices.

We need someone with direct experience to the testing, integration, and commissioning of detectors – ideally within a similar neutron scattering installation. You also need to be comfortable working with ionising radiation and associated advanced instrumentation.

As an effective communicator and collaborator, you support colleagues and foster productive relationships with scientific partners and suppliers. This role will require occasional travel to other scientific centres when required, and your work demonstrates a strong commitment to safety, professionalism, and nurturing the valuable networks that we need within the technical and scientific community.

The working language of ESS is English and we need someone who can start as soon as possible.

To apply:

A career at ESS gives you the opportunity to contribute to the future discoveries within neutron science at a stunning, brand-new workplace filled with innovative minds and brilliant people from across the globe. We offer market competitive, individualised compensation which is differentiated according to role, responsibilities, individual skills, abilities and achievements as well as monthly pension contributions on top of your salary.

If you see yourself in what we're looking for, please provide your CV and motivation letter in English . Please be aware that we can only accept direct applications made via the ESS website. Submit your application as soon as you can and quote the job reference number ESD-75257 in your application.

This role requires additional background screening processes and health and safety checks, which will be performed during the recruitment process.
