Inspection Equipment Expert Engineer

Stockholm, Stockholm, Sweden Blykalla Full time

Blykalla is developing next-generation nuclear technology through the SEALER program, requiring inspection capabilities that do not exist today. We are looking for an Inspection Equipment Expert Engineer who will lead the development, qualification, and maturation of inspection methods, instrumentation, and robotics for systems operating in molten lead and radiation environments.

This role ensures that our reactor systems and the design of SEALER itself allow for safe, effective, and reliable inspection throughout the lifecycle.

What we do at Blykalla

Blykalla is developing the next generation of nuclear technology with our Small Modular Reactor (SMR) based on innovative fuel, materials, and reactor designs. As Sweden's only SMR developer, we are on a mission to decarbonize industries and enable safe, scalable, and sustainable energy solutions. Our technology uses uranium nitride fuel and lead coolant, creating novel challenges and opportunities for the fuel cycle and supporting systems.

What you'll get to do

As an Inspection Equipment Expert Engineer, you will lead the development and qualification of inspection solutions for SEALER's lead-cooled reactor systems. You will define inspection needs, drive technology development, and influence reactor design to ensure inspectability throughout the system lifecycle with the following responsibilities:

Inspection Strategy & Design Influence:

  • Develop a systematic inspection strategy for internal and external reactor components in lead-filled environments.

  • Define inspection points, access paths, and required methods across systems and sub-systems.

  • Lead "Design for Inspection" efforts to ensure geometric access, mobility surfaces, inspection windows, and maintainability features are integrated into SEALER's design.

  • Identify critical defect mechanisms and translate them into inspection requirements.

Equipment Development & TRL Maturation:

  • Specify, develop, and mature inspection equipment and methods (e.g., UT A-scan/C-scan, phased array, sensing technologies, visual and alternative NDE methods).

  • Support design and execution of TRL maturation programs including lab tests, mock-ups, and full-scale validation.

  • Define testing needs for instrumentation, sensors, and robotics operating in molten lead and radiation conditions.

Robotics & Harsh-Environment Inspection:

  • Collaborate with robotics partners on platforms capable of surviving and operating in high-temperature lead and irradiation environments.

  • Define requirements for robotic mobility, navigation paths, manipulators, and sensing integration.

Supplier Management & Collaboration:

  • You will engage suppliers and research partners to support inspection technology development and contribute to specifications and procurement activities.

  • You will work closely with engineering and safety teams to embed inspection requirements into the reactor design and act as the internal expert on inspection capabilities.

Where this role can take you

You will play a key role in shaping inspection approaches for a first-of-a-kind reactor. As the capability grows, this role can evolve into leadership positions such as Inspection & Maintainability Lead, Technical Authority for NDT and robotics, or owner of long-term inspection programs.

Who you are

You are an engineer who thrives at the intersection of inspection technology, robotics, and systems engineering. You bring solid technical depth, a structured way of thinking, and the ability to work across disciplines to solve challenges in harsh and constrained environments.

We believe you have:

  • A relevant engineering degree (mechanical, nuclear, materials, robotics, or similar).

  • Experience with NDT methods such as ultrasonic / eddy current (UT/ET), phased array, A/C-scan, or visual/alternative inspection techniques.

  • Background in developing or applying inspection tools in demanding environments.

  • Understanding of TRL maturation, testing, and supplier interaction.

  • Knowledge of defect mechanisms in metallic or nuclear-grade systems.

  • Strong systems thinking and problem-structuring ability.

  • Clear communicator and effective collaborator across teams and partners.

  • Proactive, hands-on, and comfortable driving development work.

  • Preferred: Experience with heavy liquid metals (or similar), high-temperature systems, or robotics for inspection.

  • Background in nuclear, aerospace or other highly regulated industries.

Location

The position is based in Stockholm, with travel to Oskarshamn and partner facilities expected.

Why Blykalla?
