The European Spallation Source (ESS) is a cutting-edge research facility that pushes the boundaries of scientific knowledge. As an Instrument Scientist for ESTIA, you will be part of a dynamic team that designs, constructs, and operates the world's most powerful neutron source.

ESTIA is a focusing reflectometer designed to cater to the needs of the condensed matter and magnetic materials communities. This instrument will be among the first to become operational at ESS, offering unparalleled opportunities for research and discovery.

Your role will involve collaborating with the ESTIA team and our in-kind partner, the Paul Scherrer Institut (PSI), to deliver the instrument to hot commissioning and prepare it for user operations. You will work closely with experts from various fields to plan and execute the instrument's cold and hot commissioning.

To succeed in this role, you will need to possess a strong background in the physical sciences, with research interests and publication records aligned with the science focus of the ESTIA instrument. Experience in polarized neutron reflectometry, data treatment, and modeling is essential. Excellent written and oral English skills are also required, as well as the ability to work in a team environment and travel occasionally.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Collaborate with the ESTIA team and PSI to deliver the instrument to hot commissioning.
  • Help prepare 'First Science' experiments during the initial operation phase of ESS.
  • Provide expertise in neutron reflectometry method development and application.
  • Contribute to the development of your own research in line with the ESTIA science case.
  • Establish and maintain collaborations with universities, laboratories, and other relevant actors.
