Job Role

The Agronomist and Trait Breeder will play a vital role in driving our trait development initiatives forward. You will leverage your expertise in agronomy, crossing, field trials, trait development, and evaluation to develop robust and climate-adapted wheat.

Your contributions will be instrumental in creating foundational genetic materials that address the challenges of tomorrow's agriculture.

Responsibilities

  • Design and implement efficient crossing strategies using marker-assisted selection to validate and develop pre-breeding materials in key crops, starting with wheat.
  • Coordinate field trials conducted globally with our partners, including the development of trial protocols, execution, reporting, and result interpretation.
  • Ensure good agronomic practices in field and greenhouse operations.
  • Conduct field and greenhouse experiments to evaluate traits such as salinity tolerance, heat resistance, and nitrogen use efficiency, including plant phenotyping for trait selection.
  • Promote the development of elite material with desirable traits through crossing and introgression.
  • Support phytosanitary processes and seed logistics to ensure timely delivery of seeds for field seasons.
  • Assist in germplasm management and maintenance to guarantee quality and consistency.
  • Participate in customer/partner discussions regarding field trials and identify potential field trial partners.
  • Work closely with our research and development team to design and execute experiments, analyze data, interpret, and communicate results.

Requirements

  • Hold a M.Sc. or Ph.D. in Plant Breeding, Agronomy, or a related field, preferably with experience in wheat or other field crops.
  • Have at least 5 years of experience in trait development, plant breeding, agronomy, or pre-breeding.
  • Be knowledgeable about the seed industry and agricultural sector, with experience working in a commercial setting being a strong asset.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in trait development, including marker-assisted crossing methodologies, field trial design, phenotyping, and data analysis (preferably in wheat).
  • Display proficiency in good trialing and agronomic practices, such as supervising pest and weed control operations, conducting surveys of insect or plant diseases, and production processes such as harvesting.
  • Exhibit excellent teamwork and communication skills, including sharing responsibilities, communicating results, and collaborating on solving complex problems.
  • Demonstrate exceptional organizational and time management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines in a fast-paced research environment.
  • Show strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to design and execute experiments independently.
  • Posess effective communication and collaboration skills to work closely with diverse teams and stakeholders both internally and externally.
  • Demonstrate attention to detail and commitment to quality, safety, and research integrity.
  • Able to thrive in a fast-phased commercial R&D environment with curiosity and constant development as part of the organizational DNA.
  • Proficient in English.

  • Experience managing field and greenhouse operations.
  • Experience in agricultural biotechnology.
  • Familiarity with plant tissue culture, gene editing (e.g., CRISPR), or related lab techniques.
