The lithium-ion battery is a dominant rechargeable energy storage device, and optimizing its components is crucial for high-performance batteries. The binder plays a critical role in the mechanical properties of the electrode and long-term cycling performance. However, polymer-based binders have limitations, especially for silicon-based anodes and cathodes.
This PhD position focuses on developing a new binder system, including the synthesis and modification of biomaterials-related binders and the development of a new electrode manufacturing process. The research will contribute to the development of sustainable materials for energy storage.
The Department of Industrial and Materials Science at Chalmers tekniska högskola is a leading research environment, addressing topics with a direct impact on sustainability. The division covers the entire value chain from materials design, processing, and characterization to machining of primarily metals.
As a PhD student, your major responsibility is to pursue your own doctoral studies related to the project. You will design and perform experiments in different labs, develop hand-on skills to fabricate high-performance batteries, and communicate the results of your research verbally and in writing.
In addition to your research, you will dedicate 10 percent of your time to departmental duties, including teaching on the undergraduate level.
