The field of electric aviation is rapidly advancing as a key solution for mitigating climate change and minimizing environmental impacts associated with air travel. In this role, you will be integral to evaluating this innovative technology.
Project Scope
This initiative aims to provide critical insights into the environmental effects of electric aviation and strategies for their mitigation. Utilizing prospective life cycle assessment methodologies, the research will involve upscaling techniques and the use of forward-looking databases. The outcomes are expected to yield actionable assessments and design guidelines beneficial for policymakers and industry stakeholders. One segment of the research will focus on near-commercial hybrid-electric aircraft in collaboration with industry partners, while another will explore the long-term viability of electric aviation based on future battery advancements. This project builds upon prior research and existing partnerships, establishing a robust foundation for contributions to the fields of electric aviation and life cycle assessment.
Departmental Information
The position is situated within a division dedicated to environmental systems analysis, where we investigate the sustainability and environmental impacts of various technological systems. Our research employs a systems-oriented approach that encompasses technology, stakeholders, and ecological systems. The division thrives on interdisciplinary collaboration, bringing together expertise from engineering, natural sciences, and social sciences, all committed to fostering a sustainable future.
Key Responsibilities
As part of this project, your duties will include:
- Designing and executing studies
- Data collection and analysis
- Modeling and computational assessments
- Communicating findings through scientific publications and presentations
- Engaging with a reference group of experts
Additionally, you will have the opportunity to contribute to undergraduate teaching, comprising approximately 10% of your time.
Qualifications
We seek candidates with a Ph.D. focused on environmental or sustainability assessment, environmental systems analysis, industrial ecology, or life cycle assessment. Proficiency in life cycle assessment is essential, and familiarity with prospective life cycle assessment is advantageous. Strong academic writing skills and effective communication abilities in English are also required.
