ScopeMaster thesis, 2 students completing 30 credits (20 weeks) each.
BackgroundEdge networks can grow into being overly complex, where each device is expected to operate independently under the restrictions of the network while collaborating with other devices. A general description of expected network activity is not possible, as the circumstances and use cases differ between devices. We would like to investigate the means of training models on network activity information obtained from individual edge devices, in order to detect and respond to unusual network activities.
Differences between a federated and a centralized learning approach should be investigated.
Federated learning means that a model is constructed centralized and sent to each node, each node takes the model and trains it with its data, then sends it back to the centralized node which updates the common model.
Investigate the feasibility and performance of federated learning approaches in edge networks, considering distributed machine learning models trained across multiple edge devices while preserving data privacy and minimizing communication overhead.
Centralized learning would mean that each edge node in the network collects and sends data to the central server which then processes it and hands out models to each edge node.
Can we solve the potential privacy issues?
GoalThe thesis work should answer following questions:
•Is there any existing tools/models that can be used for this purpose?
•What are the resource implications of the different approaches?
•What are the privacy implications of the different approaches?
•Can we identify unusual network activities?
