Do you want to contribute to improving human health?

Do you want to be involved in developing education and research at one of the world's highest-ranked dental schools? The Department of Dental Medicine at Karolinska Institutet has been ranked best in the world three times in terms of education and research over the past decade. Here we provide undergraduate education for dental-, dental hygienist- and postgraduate students as well as master and doctoral studies.

The Division of Oral Health and Periodontology provides undergraduate training in dental hygiene and periodontology, postgraduate training in periodontology as well as Masters and Doctoral level education. The Division’s research activities span from translational to clinical research, with emphasis in pathogenetic mechanisms of periodontal diseases and the links between oral health and systemic conditions. There is also strong component of epidemiological and pedagogical research.

Description of the subject area

Periodontology is the dental specialty that focuses on the prevention, diagnosis, risk assessments and treatment of periodontal diseases. The diseases are very common with a global prevalence of 19% and a prevalence of 11% in Sweden. The specialty also takes under consideration the treatment of peri-implant diseases. Research in the subject of periodontology and periimplantitis has a very broad spectrum and ranges from the biological investigation of basic pathogenetic mechanisms to the treatment of complex cases of the diseases, as well as periodontal medicine (i.e. the investigation of the association between periodontal diseases and other systemic diseases or conditions, such as cardiometabolic, neurodegenerative and autoimmune disorders). The Department of Dental Medicine at Karolinska Institutet has a long tradition in the field of periodontal medicine, manifested by strong collaboration with different medical specialties and the establishment of well characterized nationwide cohorts where the studies are applied. The announced professorship is expected to develop and further strengthen research and teaching in periodontology, delivering both a national and an international perspective.

Your mission

We are looking for a person who is passionate for periodontal research and education on an internationally competitive level. Of particular importance is to develop the collaboration between the Department of Dental Medicine and Region Stockholm, other universities, and other actors of the surrounding society. An important task is to strengthen the links between research and education. Furthermore, the professor is expected to continue to contribute within the field of periodontitis and its correlation to general health.

The applicant is therefore expected to run independently their own research group, with supervision of research students at the undergraduate, masters, and doctoral levels.
